[Hong Kong, May 13] - A couple in China have named their baby son Saddam SARS to mark the two important events taking place at the time of his birth, a newspaper reports.

The boy was born on March 20, the day the Iraq war broke out and at a time when alarm over the SARS outbreak was spreading across China.

His parents, from Hubei, have named the boy Saddam Deng SARS, the South China Morning Post reported.

Deng is the parents' family name.

If the boy was born in 1998, he could have been Bubba BJ.

That would be Sodom Sores, not Saddam SARS.

I pity the poor kid.
Apparently his parents really hate him, to give him such names.

As I understand it, Deng is pronounced "dung," but in deference to the former leader they fudged the transliteration.

Some parents ought to be hung by their thumbs for pinning names like this on their kids. I know of a girl from around here whose parents' last name was Klir and they named their daughter Kristal Klir (pronounced like "clear").

Make that spelling "Crystal Klir". I double-checked with a friend of mine who went to school with the Klir family. The mother, I think, was a serious "stage mom". Crystal was a child actress in some of the musical theater productions around here.
