Fatal DU Carjacking Suspect Sentenced Teen Gets Youth Offender Time, Suspended Prison Time DENVER -- The driver of a car being chased by police that killed a DU student was handed a 6-year-sentence Friday.

The parents of Ronnie Hernandez, 17, sobbed as the judge imposed the sentence, which included a suspended 12-year prison term.

Hernandez was driving a stolen sport utility vehicle being followed by Denver Police on Feb. 20 when he crashed into a car driven by Qi Zhang, 19, at the intersection of High and Asbury streets (pictured, left). The violent impact sent both vehicles into the front yard of a house, with the GMC Yukon ending up upside down and the victim's Ford Taurus rammed into a tree.

Zhang, a University of Denver student, died from her injuries.

Unbelievable! This person steals a car, runs from the police, hits and kills a woman, and gets PROBATION!!! Can this really be true? Is this America? People get worse sentences than this for stealing bread. Who is the judge that handed down a probation sentence?

"PROBATION!!!"

Well, don't worry.

Colorado's 67 Stikes and You're Out Program will eventually catch up with this perp.

personally I'd much rather have my toes sucked than being killed - but then again I'm sorta "liberal" that way...

Kinda makes the case for mandatory minimum sentences that the liberals get all outraged about doesn't it.

Now, now, you know we must not offend the minorities, that might be concidered "racist". He just comes from a disavantaged backround, and next ime he steals a car (next week!) he'll have learned a valuable lesson. Don't get chased. Besides, he didn't run any school zones, and that's "Good for the Children"

They should throw the idiot parents into jail with him. What morons they are believing their little child is being punished too severely because he's facing probation. How sad for the victim's parents that their daughter's life means so little.

How long do you think it will be before we are reading about Ronnie Hernandez again? Not long I'm sure.

The girl's parents must be enraged, their daughter's life had no meaning to the court.

Hernandez pleaded guilty in April to vehicular homicide and vehicular eluding resulting in death. Police said he got the SUV he was driving as the result of a carjacking.

The Chinese vote in Denver is nonexistent. Gotta court the Latino vote for Mares, don't you know. Besides, Hernandez did the city a favor by pleading guilty thus saving them the cost of a trial. The least the judge could do was go easy on a poor juvenile delinquent who only committed seven or eight felonies during his little jaunt. Wouldn't want to stigmatize him, would you. I wonder if Beef Wellington Webb gave the judge a call and reminded him what was at stake.

Isn't carjacking a federal crime? With a mandatory death sentence?

Or didn't that law go through?

Considering the deaths happened while committing another felony, he should have been charged with capital murder.

No, that charge is only used when guns are involved. Denver probably wants to make room in prison for owners of "assault weapons", which Denver has banned the possession of.

A jackass just walked off death row in Colorado because the jury read the Bible before his sentencing
