ROME -- A star high school football player convicted of statutory rape and aggravated child molestation was sentenced to 15 years in the state penitentiary.
Marcus Dixon, 18, was accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl in a trailer on Pepperell High School property Feb. 12.
Superior Court Judge Walter Matthews said, "My hands are tied by the Legislature in so far as the mandatory minimum."
Dixon had been tried on six counts. He was found not guilty of rape, false imprisonment, sexual battery and aggravated assault.
"I know we shouldn't have had sex but it was consensual," Dixon told Matthews before the sentencing. "I apologize to her family and I know my family has forgiven her and her family. I didn't force anybody and I wouldn't hurt anybody."
Dixon's legal guardians, Kenneth and Peri Jones, said they'll keep fighting. "This isn't right," Peri Jones said. "I probably shouldn't say this but it's strictly a black and white issue. If he had had sex with a black girl, nobody would have done anything.
"Now, they're sending him to prison for 10 years," she said.
Dixon's defense attorney, Fred Simpson, said he would appeal the sentence to the Supreme Court.

One in five US adolescents has sex before turning 15*** About 20 percent of adolescents in the US have had sexual intercourse before their 15th birthday -- and one in seven of the sexually experienced 14-year-old girls has been pregnant, according to a new report released on Monday by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
The report, an analysis of seven studies conducted in the late 1990s, offers a comprehensive look at the sexual activities of 12- to 14-year-olds, a group often overlooked in discussions of adolescent sexuality.
"These are not new data sets, but I think this is the first time we've put together all these numbers in a way that tells the story about young people this age," said Sarah Brown, director of the campaign, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group based in Washington.
"Remember, a lot of researchers, as well as a lot of people who fund research, are reluctant to ask questions about sexual behavior to very young people, so there's not an enormous amount of information about this age group.
"This is a wake-up call that the efforts that we make toward young people have to start early, that teachers looking at a class of 13-year-olds can't assume they're in a state of latent innocence."

People like me. With 5 of them to pay for the options are limited. We stay in very close touch with what is going on. My guess is many of the victim kids parents are very uninvolved on a day to day basis....
what a racist pig
That conclusion isn't based on reality. Yes there are kids that are sexually active that are prey to school personnel but there are many that have good parents that have become the victims of these men. I personally know of two cases and both girls were from good families where their parents WERE involved. In both cases the teachers were music teachers. These girls were in the band .. parents thought they were keeping their kids busy and involved in school out of trouble. NOT.
Unfortunately when some of these crimes are discovered the teachers are let go and they move to another state and are hired, continuing to engage in crimminal activity. It's a hell of a thing to have so many child sexual predators in education, isn't it?
This guy got a raw deal. We have a gross contradiction in our legal system. If this girl had become pregnant and wanted an abortion, the law would treat her like an adult, i.e., the parents would have no say whatsoever in the abort/let-live decision.
Also, there's a big difference in teacher-student sex and student-student sex.
I send my children to public schools. What are you trying to insinuate here?
Bump!
That public schools, besides not being up to good academic standards, are not safe.
