Hollywood and the supposed boycotts that have pundits all up in arms
By Lisa Sarrach President
There have been scores of columns written in the past month or so by pundits and activists showing their collective disgust and outrage over the treatment of the Dixie Chicks and more recently Danny Glover, harkening back to the time of the McCarthy Era and blacklisting.
Just last Thursday, the Detroit News own Laura Berman displayed her outrage at the new supposed Hollywood blacklist being compiled by high-tech bullies who want to drum up ratings and drown out dissent.
Lets take a walk back to the studio days of Hollywood, when actors and actresses were under contract to one studio, and they were subject to morals clauses. Almost anything that could cause embarrassment to the studio was subject to suspension or out and out firing. Act such as adultery, children out of wedlock, committing crimes, drugs and alcohol abuse could get you suspended or released from your studio contract.

Sorry Hollywood, we have a right to respond in our own way to your comments. It IS a free country, remember?

I wondered what happened to Berman. Looks like she doesn't like how business works either. No one's taking away anyone's free speech. I'm just choosing not to buy the products of certain individuals. I won't buy Michael Moore's junk.

The Hollywood liberals want to have it both ways. They want to be able to criticise the republicans for their beleifs with no repercussions to them. But when the GOP takes aim at the libs they say we are not being fair and should not attack them for their beliefs. The 1st ammendment only restricts the government from censuring free speech not individuals. We certainly have a right to attack liberals for what they say.

At least during the McCarthy era the communist went underground.
Hopefully the modern anti-american crowd will slither under a rock when the heat of public opinion and boycott hits them. With lots of hissing of course.

Ms. Bermans bottom line suggestion that there is a return of the Blacklist is disingenuous. The McCarthy hearings of the 1950s was a government run operation, this is 21st century consumer driven call to arms; to quote from Peter Finch in Network, Were mad as hell and were not going to take it anymore.A dose of their own medicine!!!!!

And if you continue to blame America first, disrespect the people across America who pay your salaries by purchasing your products, and continue to disparage a president that 70% of the people in this country respect and admire, then you have earned the right to be fired by the American people. Most of the "B" and "C"-list actors on the assorted "Boycott Hollywood" lists were fired by the American people some time ago.
Mike Farrell, Ed Asner, what have you guys done lately? Susan Sarandon hasn't had a blockbuster since "Thelma and Louise" and that was during the first Bush Administration. Same with Tim Robbins who (aside for the suprising success of "Shawshank Redemption" --which was carried by conservative actor, Morgan Freeman) hasn't really had a hit since 1988's "Bull Durham."
Where are the A-list actors? What are Tom Cruise's opinions on war? How does Tom Hanks feel about president Bush? These actors (and many others) have wisely chosen to keep their mouths shut as they don't want to offend huge segments of movie going Americans.
There is another reason why many of these actors are keeping their mouths shut. Could it be that they agree with the President, like him, and don't want to get "blacklisted" and "boycotted" by their own producers and co-stars? I'm sure for many (though I doubt most) Hollywood actors, this is the case.
Personally, I'll boycott Hollywood for making crappy movies. I won't boycott Hollywood because an handful of so-called "stars" (many of whom haven't actually been famous since the Carter-era) want to see their names in print.

Hey, remember when Gore's wife was on a tare to eleminate nasty lyrics in music. That didn't bother them(the Hollywood artists), at least not out loud. Now if she had been Cheny's wife, well......

Hey Dan
We are from the Great Lake state of Michigan too -
now we are in NYC - we gotta spread around our strong midwest values... in the arts as we are it is a bit tricky....
Laura Berman has it all wrong...the 'high tech-bullies' she talks about are just regular folk who finally have some mode of tranmitting our views...the multi-zillionaire Hollywooders get all the TV / airtime they want...
What is wrong with Berman...I absolutely will never go see a film or buy a record of any of these left-wing spoiled stars.

Where in Michigan? I'm from Livingston County(even Carl Lenin lost here) - 1/2 way between Detroit/Lansing.
Berman's had it wrong for years. She's the major liberal at the Detroit News. I remember her anti-gun editorials from a couple of years ago.

Speaking with the almighty dollar. Kind of put the kabosh on the idea that campaign reform is not limiting free speach, don't it?

High Tech Bullies to these nitwits means folks with PC's and online subscriptions.
If that passes for high tech for these people, I'm a geek.

From 2/23/03 -
Clooney, 41, said Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was making a mistake to think a war against Iraq would be an easy win for the United States.
"I believe he thinks this is a war that can be won, but there is no such thing anymore," said Clooney, who starred in a film about the 1991 Gulf War "Three Kings" that took a dark look at the war to drive Iraq out of Kuwait.
"We can't beat anyone anymore," added Clooney, who has called it unfair that Americans opposed to war are being branded unpatriotic.
Clooney, who won fame for his leading role in long-running hospital drama "ER", has also appeared in films including "Batman and Robin", "The Perfect Storm" and "Brother Where Art Thou?".
Dipstick Clooney is on my PERMANENT excrement list...

PS...the funny part about hollywood and the others who support all these ridiculous causes is one of these days we could all wake up under a socialist way of life and then guess what? Hollywood and their ilk would NOT have any of the trappings and bank accounts and all the things they have now. Their kids would go to the schools the Gov't sends them too and and they would have NOTHING...the only ones who would have anything would be the vile ones in charge. Why Hollywood and their ilk can't see this is beyond me. They better pray people like President Bush continues to protect the American people or the life they wake up too will be nothing like they are living and by then it will be too late to do anything about it. They will be part of a GROUP of people because individuals and individualism will be gone!!! Wake up Hollywood. You probably in our own minds have the most to lose.
