Vincente Fox Calls for More Immigration, to Tell Bush at Upcoming Meeting

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Now that the Iraqi war is over and nearly two years have passed since the September 11 attacks, it is time for the United States and Mexico to focus on immigration issues, Mexican President Vicente Fox (news - web sites) said.

In an interview published in the Washington Post, Fox recalled the death of 19 illegal immigrants from Mexico in a stifling truck trailer earlier this month, saying this was a sign of the need to make the flow of Mexican workers into the United States more "safe and orderly."

"To see people die following their dream is very sad," Fox told the daily in his office in Mexico City. "Something must be done."

He criticized members of the US Congress who consider increased immigration from Mexico a threat to US security, calling their concerns "thinking from 50 years ago", and urged US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) to make good on commitment to normalize the status of an estimated four million illegal Mexican immigrants in the United States.

"It's understandable that the worry exists, but we must be pragmatic and objective in evaluating the situation: No terrorists have come from Mexico, and none has been a Mexican," said Fox.

Fox, who will meet Bush informally this weekend at the meeting of the Group of Eight industrialized nations in Evian, France, said he did not believe Mexico's opposition to the US-led war on Iraq (news - web sites) had caused irreparable damage to US-Mexican relations.

He said Mexico had gone to great lengths to cooperate with the United States on border security and anti-terrorism measures.

Now, he said, "we will be insisting on our priority, which is migration."

Bush and Fox were making progress on immigration rules when the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks put the issue on the back burners.

Fox proposed a "sector-by-sector" approach, first granting work visas to nurses and bilingual teachers, who are in short supply some parts of the United States.

The majority of Mexicans who travel to the United States, Fox said, have "a clear dream to work," adding that they were "reliable people" who have helped drive the successful US economy in recent years.

Yeah right.

"Here you go, amigos, here's a packet of food and some water. Now get up and RUN. These gringos are watching the Super Bowl."

"Didn't Fox say to take a left turn at the red cactus?"

1. It was France that told us to allow the world's tired and poor into America -- on the statue of Liberty. We don't need to take their advice.
2. Bilingual teachers needed? I doubt it. English is the language here.

Fox is smoking loco weed.

QUESTION: How many Mexicans does it take to screw in a Texas light bulb?

ANSWER: We don't know but should soon once all the Mexicans have moved to Texas.

Did I hear something about the families of the dead illegals suing the US for not making it safer to sneak into the country?

What kind of "President" encourages his people to immigrate to another country anyway? Fox is no leader, he's a frigging travel agent!

It does not matter what Mr. Fox calls for.

If American businesses need Mexican labor, they will find a way to import it.

If American businesses don't need Mexican labor, no call from Mr. Fox will do any good.

The fact the Mexican immigration has cooled off lately is just a direct result of the slow down on the US economy.

If our economy picks up soon, you will see another increase in Mexican immigration, both legal and illegal.

Why is Fox so bent on "exporting" his people to the U.S.? Could it be that he wants us to assume to costs of caring for these people so that he doesn't have to?

And you can't or won't fix your own mess, then be prepared to live under OUR laws and regulations.

Fox's statements are absolutey ludicrous....... yes those people died which is tragic but they were trying to enter this country illegally. Mayeb El Jefe should look at his own country for some indication of why his citizens are willing to risk their lives to come here and work minimum wage (or less) jobs.

OK, for every Mexican citizen admitted to the USA, there must be an American citizen admitted to Mexico with the same rights, including the right to buy land and hold secure title to same.

If this were done, in twenty-five years, there would be no Mexico.

What a stupid statement. Does this mean Fox is going to meet with bank officials to make sure no one gets hurt robbing a bank? Is he going to meet with drug lords to make sure their transactions are (in his words) "safe and orderly"?

Safe and orderly illegal activity everyone!

Fox will have to get used to the idea that the future immigration will consist mainly of college educated Mexicans, leaving his nation both poorer and more isolated.

"No terrorists have come from Mexico, and none has been a Mexican," said Fox.

I consider illegal aliens to be "economic terrorists" to Americans.

Takes a lot of nerve. I remember the old cry about the Watts rioters being "poverty crazed." That ol' dog didn't hunt then and it wont hunt now. To argue that it's perfectly reasonable for people to enter this country illegally to work (Illegally) borders on the absurd. The reason most come here is to get a handout. Mexico would be one of the richhest countries in the hemisphere if they didn't devote all their energy to securing the time honored "mordida." They are so intent on stealing from one another that they don't want to do anything about their corrupt and bankrupt economy.A "reliable people" who have helped drive the US economy right to the brink of economic disaster is more like it. If Fox wants to do something constructive let him stop the parade across our border. It's like overloading a lifeboat:irresponsible and destructive to all.

I am very worried about this. The Bush administration has not been forceful in controlling our borders - and doesn't seem to give any indication that they are concerned about the illegal situation. I think if the American people knew how many illegals are REALLY in our country the outcry would be tremendous. At least I hope it would be. Tom Tancredo is a voice crying in the wilderness and the administration's only action is to look for someone to run against him. What in the hell is going on?

Why you bottom feeding do nothing wet back why don't you help your own people instead of keeping them in poverty, revolution and drug trading.

What a low life moran!

The fact the Mexican immigration has cooled off lately is just a direct result of the slow down on the US economy.

Illegal immigration certainly hasn't cooled off here on the Arizona border. Mexico's economy is in the toilet and we're seeing many more well-to-do people jumping the fence.

"The fact the Mexican immigration has cooled off lately is just a direct result of the slow down on the US economy."

Really??? How much is illegal immigration down by, 25%?,

Also it might interest you to know that the Mexican birth rate (in Mexico) recently fell below 2.1, however in the US it is about 3.0, but the birth rate here is falling, slowly but steadily.

In ten years, the Illegal Immigrant birth rate should be close to 2.0.
