cherry...if women are taking hormone replacement therapy they tend to put on 5 pounds a year ,according to the late Dr. Atkins. Such was the case with me. After I heard him talk about these women being ketosis resistant, I quit taking my HRTs and began his diet.

Since Jan 24 I have lost 51 pounds.
My goal is another 25 pounds.
My acid reflux is gone!!!!!!!!I feel terrific. No more Prevacid. It's actually been easy.

text tabLast week the media reported extensively on two new studies published in the May 22 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. Both studies compared the results of individuals who followed a low-fat diet with those who did Atkins or an Atkins-type low carbohydrate program.

The results of the studies add to the growing body of evidence supporting the low carbohydrate approach and are consistent with the findings of other recent trials comparing Atkins to low-fat programs. In both of the new studies, the low carbohydrate participants lost more weight and showed greater improvements in cardiovascular risk factors than did the low-fat participants.

Despite these positive findings, media coverage was inconsistent. Let us give you the full story, based solely on facts, for each study.

The Veterans Administration Study
The research conducted by Frederick F. Samaha, M.D., et al, is one of the first studies that has looked at significantly obese patients. The 132 subjects weighed an average of 288 pounds—and many also had diabetes or the metabolic syndrome (a prediabetic condition), heart disease, hypertension and high total cholesterol. Half the volunteers were placed on a low carbohydrate program, the others on a conventional low-fat program. After six months, the individuals on the low carb arm of the study had lost more weight and demonstrated better results in certain cardiovascular and diabetes markers than did those on the low-fat arm.

Yes, it does. Yes. But keep total carbs below 70grams if you want to lose weight. Women lose slower because they have less muscle mass than men. More muscles/activity means more energy burned. Step up your activity level a little and you will see a change. It's not unusual to lose 3 pounds a week on a carefully-followed low-carb diet.

My questions for the ages: At what point in human history did a synthetic, processed, carb/chemical/filler-laden diet become more nutritious than the historical, natural, and wholesome unrefined diet of our ancestors? If the synthetic diets are so much better for us than the natural diet, how come so many more people are fat, diabetic, and sick than 100 years ago? And, finally, why do we let people who don't know anything about the biochemistry of human metabolism tell us that synthetic foods and the removal of natural, unrefined foods is healthful for us? YES!
Anything that isn't on the above list.
