CBS News/Lautenberg hit piece on guns.(Call CBS)
Heckler

CBS News ran a story this evening(second story of the evening) that highlighted a "hole" in the Homeland Security System. The premise of the story was that when a person buys a gun from a dealer their name is not checked against a "terrorist watch list". Frank Lautenberg came on saying that a waiting period should be instituted during a heightened state of alert to give the FBI time to check them against a watch list.
What the story didnt say is that a person must be a U.S. citizen to purchase a gun from a dealer, and that if a terrorist has the resources to fake documents proving that they are a U.S. citizen checking them against a watch list does no good because if they have an ounce of brains they will use an alias that is not on a watch list. This proposed waiting period would only affect law abiding citizens.
In my opinion this story was nothing more than an intentional attempt by CBS News to scare people who know no better to support additional restricions on gun purchases.

Call CBS and tell them how transparent their story was. I called and spoke to someone who was very courteous and listened to what I had to say. The more calls the better.( it will do some good )

The problem is the watch list is already checked for gun purchasers. The FBI has linked the databases.
The second problem is that the NICS systen has reduced the time so 80% are checked while on the phone. Goal is 90%. FBI crime database is the problem.

I wasn't aware that any US citizens were on a terrorist watch list.

I'm sure that the producer of this story is well aware of that, I KNOW that Lautenberg knows this. The story is just another anti-gun scare piece to frighten the sheeple into supporting more gun control, particularly "assault weapons".

Yep, I wasn't sure you were aware of this. CBS surely has the sources to check this as well. But as the NYT does, CBS => Constant Bull Shiite.
As to US citizen terrorists, how about the buffalo 6? But the story I read said citizens were not the issue since there may be illegals trying to buy guns. An illegal with a clean name would not ring the bell.
So there might be a real issue in all the smoke, but it sure as hell isn't dealt with by a waiting period.

Yep sure can, it's as phoney as it comes. A call to Ashcroft's office should get you the response "they have been on this for some while."
CBS and fartenburg are trying to manufacture an issue out of whole cloth.

Like the Communist Broadcasting System would care what any of us says.

Actually, Federal law doesn't say you must be a citizen to buy from a dealer. You must be a legal resident of the USA.

What the story didnt say is that a person must be a U.S. citizen to purchase a gun from a dealer False. Legal aliens are allowed to buy firearms and ammunition under certain circumstances.

The war on terror is a conduit for all sorts of interests, of which none have anything to do with terror.
Beware the stupidity of the public.

Nobody watches CBS anyway so who cares? What's Lautenberg goint to do? Reach the entire CBS audience? and that would do what? Get his office staff riled up for an assault weapons ban?
