High-definition TV exposes Hollywood's ugly truths
Extra-clear TV reveals stars' imperfections, including once-concealed skin conditions

Stop the presses -- Cameron Diaz has skin problems, according to high-definition television, which is threatening to expose the previously invisible "flaws" of the world's most physically beautiful people. As HDTV spreads its digital clarity into homes worldwide, Hollywood is sounding the alarm. The stars are running for cover, warts and all, only to find the most advanced makeup wizardry to date failing to save perfect face. Plastic surgeons are drooling. The makeup industry is strategizing. As the ugly truth reveals itself to an ever-expanding digital audience, some of the beautiful people have come clean. Faced with the horror of a sudden acne attack, Ms. Diaz reportedly skipped a premiere showing of Gangs of New York. "I want girls to realize that nobody looks like the women in the glossy photos without the help of a load of talented people," she recently confessed to Glamour magazine. Those talented people, who make up the "Hollywood glamour machine," are looking for new answers, television industry columnist Phillip Swann explained in Television Week. On Ms. Diaz, a regular on People magazine's list of the world's most beautiful, Mr. Swann writes, "the magazine's editors -- and most of the Western world -- do not have high-definition TV. If they did, they would see that Diaz's face is spotted with small pockmarks, the unfortunate consequence of a longtime acne problem. "When seen on film," Mr. Swann says, "Diaz's skin imperfections are not noticeable, thanks to Hollywood's talented makeup artists. However, with HDTV, the picture is so precise that the acne damage cannot be hidden. In a high-def broadcast of Charlie's Angels on HBO, Diaz looks like a different person. She's still very pretty. But to be frank, I doubt that she would make People's most beautiful list." A revolution in makeup, still in its infancy, is underway to cover the blemishes broadcast by HDTV. The art of airbrush makeup, a thin water-based liquid spray-painted onto face and body, is still being perfected. "Airbrush is absolutely the wave of the future," said Amy Coffman, an airbrush artist with The Airbrush Shoppe, Etc. in Kansas City. "With high-definition TV, you can see every single flaw. And the only way to really disguise those flaws is to use the airbrush. It's still a really new thing; there are not a lot of people that actually have the skills. "The airbrush comes out in such a finely atomized spray --in such a light coat that you can't even tell that it's there," said Ms. Coffman, whose company has applied makeup for Playboy, Mardi Gras, the Winter Olympics and the Super Bowl. "It does the job and it's the only option with HDTV. It's catching a lot of attention" in Hollywood and out.

I love it when fake people are shown for the fakes they really are.

They are just entertainment and are supposed to be fake.
They are playing make-believe for heavens sake.
Diaz has said before in another interview that had she known the damage the sun does, she would have never been in it as much as she is.

"I want girls to realize that nobody looks like the women in the glossy photos without the help of a load of talented people," she recently confessed to Glamour magazine. this is a false statement. there are millions and millions of beautiful women. it just ain't necessarily the hollywood women.

We got got HD and this is sooo true! I have been amazed at the flaws that I could never see before! It has been quite an education.

It is as fine a comment as I have ever seen. And, very sweet, too.

This is what I said from the introduction of HDTV, which I first saw at an NAB convention in Dallas years ago. The picture they had up on it was a lovely still life of a bowl of glistening fruit. But I told the guys at the booth, "Nobody watches a bowl of fruit on TV. We watch things like Hugh Downs and Barbara Walters, and I sure as hell don't want to see that in razor sharp detail. There's a reason why they shoot Barbara through a piece of burlap dipped in Vaseline."

hey. as far as i'm concerned women are what makes life bearable. at least for me that's the way it works. :-)
To: OneVike
I have a great appreciation for Jamie Lee Curtis.
She was featured in a women's magazine in all of her glory...as a woman over forty. Her reasoning in doing this was that she wanted "normal" women to know that the aging process was alive and well in Hollyweird. She, in fact, has not had any "corrective" surgery.
She has aged, but she has aged beautifully.

Well yes and no. Today's standard computer monitors can handle the resolution of HDTV without a problem. By the way, some computer video cards are designed so that they can use an HDTV instead of a computer monitor if a person wanted to do that.
This is kind of ironic, everyone in the entertainment industry have been harping for more clearer television and when they get it that, they get a little more than they asked for.

Uh, this is true and false. I've recently been enjoying the exquisite pleasure of escorting a young lady who does indeed have Hollywood-type looks, up close and personal in 3d as opposed to thru an airbrushed TV screen.
BUT, this level of appearance is exceedingly rare, I doubt there are millions and millions of such women are out there. Would that there were! (sigh)

So...where are the pictures of the skin in question?

They are just entertainment and are supposed to be fake. They are playing make-believe for heavens sake.Oh give me a break! These people put themselves up on a pedastal and act like we barely have the right to breath the same air.
The most beautiful woman in the world to me is my crippled wife, and people like Cameron Diaz do not know what it's like to be honest and beautiful.
So don't act like you know where she is coming from, you show your ignorance when you do that.

By the way, some computer video cards are designed so that they can use an HDTV instead of a computer monitor if a person wanted to do that. You're probably thinking of the DVI interface - most HDTV monitors already have a standard 15-pin VGA port attached, letting you use it as a computer monitor with any ordinary graphics card. But, of course, that's an analog link, versus the DVI port, which is digital all the way through...

No but I'm sure too much of it would damage the skin badly enough to prevent it from healing properly from acne problems.

damn man. there are more gorgous women in your town alone than in all of hollywood. you've been dupped... Well yeah, this is true because "Hollywood" is a very small collection of women as opposed to a sample of millions in my city. But that doesn't mean that genuine Hollywood lookers are common! Maybe I'm just picky, but I figure I only meet a truly stunning woman once every couple of months, and I meet a lot of women.

This HDTV technology is amazing! I saw a demo in a Sears electronics department and it just blew me away. Look up close...very close...so close that you would see the individual red green and blue dots on an old-fashioned TV: all you see is detail of the picture, as though it were film from a film projector.
It's very much like looking through a window and I can't wait for full rollout. As soon as I can get one of those babies for less than a grand, I'm there!

The "honest and ugly" photo shoot seems to be a growing trend right now. First Annie Lennox and now Jamie Lee Curtis.
I guess they think it makes them more respectable. Personally, I'd still prefer Hollywood's little white lies and see these women as gorgeous as they can be. I don't enjoy looking at a beautiful woman who makes herself look like a bag lady.

I returned a Pocket PC to our local CompUSA store Thursday. The place was quiet and they had StarWars II running on a Panasonic plasma screen. Unbelievable. I watched the last 45 minutes (all the best parts) from about 3 feet away.
I could really see every minute flaw in Yoda's complexion.

I live in Dallas and on ANY given day, one can go to a mall (especially the Galleria) or any other public place and see women with no or very little makeup... many are drop dead hot.
Hollywood women are made up dolls that can be quite scarry without their masks. I saw a website that capured photos of many starlets... in many cases, not very flattering.
