John Silvia, chief economist at Wachovia Securities, noted other reasons employers might be slower than ever to hire new workers, including employee health-care costs and a rising level of overseas production. He warned that even the Federal Reserve's campaign of cutting interest rates to 40-year lows, as well as the tax cuts recently signed into law by President Bush, might not help create many new jobs, even if they boost the economy. "If we get increased demand, where is the supply coming from? Is it domestic, or is it imported from Canada, Latin America and Asia? That's still an open question," Silvia said.

A valid point. Investment of corporate monies not taxed might go overseas. Good for stockholders (hopefully) but not for US jobs.

Not necessarily. The company may hire new, lower-wage employees and let you go as a money-saving strategy. Happens all the time.

Some companies will run the same ad for a high-paying IT or engineering position just about forever, but for some reason every one who applies is turned down because they only have 26 of the 27 industry-and-corporate-specific skills this job requires. Then, lo and behold, when they are unable to find even one single "qualified" American applicant, in comes the H1-B hire from Shanghai or Mumbai, who "just happens" to have all 27 of the 27 industry-and-corporate-specific skills and just the right number of years of experience!

Only CNN could spin a Market recovery that continues in SPITE of the constant gloom and doom forcasts of some sort of reactionary slowdown, increased Q1 activity in the service sector DESPITE terrorism and the SARS hype and a first quarter GDP a hair higher than expected as a BAD thing.

One contract firm who works pretty much exclusivly for Caterpillar went so far as to post an ad stating the applicant must be fluent in chinese or indian (or several of the various dialects)

Right. They could be hiring a sales man to sell off all the office furniture and computers after they close the company...

That is of course if you are looking for an odd twist on a "help wanted" sign..in an attempt to make the fact companies are hiring, a negative thing.

That is exactly what has been happening here. Not too many full time jobs. Mostly part time jobs available. Then they don't have to pay vacation, medical, retirement, etc. And they pay LOW pay. I have three grown kids who have been job hunting lately. Even our big employer a chemical plant prefers to give early retirement to their perm. workers then they hire them back as "contrators" and they don't have to pay benefits. Just hourly wages, but they do pay WELL there. They aren't hiring any new people right now due to the economy, the recent war, (one of their future projects will be in Kuwait and had to wait till after the war), and they are being sued for asbestos, which they never made. But the suit is costing them big $$$ so they aren't hiring, giving raises, promotions, bonuses, etc. Not expanding much right now. Never made asbestos. But bought a company two years ago, that used to make the sh*t many years ago, so OUR company is being sued for something we never did. This is HURTING the current employees who probably weren't even in school yet when the asbestos was made.....
