Savoy..always a good choice!

During a political convention Arthur Bryants or Gates would be a madhouse...

Free Illbay

Follow the logic:

Illbay is Pig Latin for Bill
Bill is a nickname for William
Willy (alternate spelling of Willie) is also a nickname for William

Ergo, Free Illbay = Free Willy

Obviously, Tom Servo is promoting the MST3K version of Free Willy [I presume a future release]. Can't Wait!

Security was also another factor. Mr. Brinkley and the network trusted me to not put him or anyone else in jeopardy and they didn't wish to be assigned any 'big eared muscle'. An extra twenty dollars to Vincent the bartender assured that no one would be asking for autographs or interupting their discussion. Gene Walsh, Vice President of the NBC News Press also valued my judgement in such matters. He made it possible for me to have similar duties during several World Series. Like they say, 'it's who ya know and who knows you.'

One wonders how it is that some folks never seem to grow up; unfortunately POTUS42 comes to mind. Then there is someone such as Mr. Brinkley and one wonders if he somehow got past adolescence very early in some way, maybe before entering his school years..! especially if he went to our public schools.

Hope to meet you, Mr. Brinkley.

Was Buckley working for his TV show that year?

Strange with all the posts to the contrary, but I distinctly remember Brinkley saing the famous GD word on the tv program before the election. And it was Cokie who told him he couldn't say that on the air.

Wow. Interesting deduction.

BTW, did you work for Oliver Stone on his "JFK" movie?

Could be, but it was a great 'Real' TV moment at about 1AM Election night 1996 just as they were going off the air..just the kind of thing he would have said in the green room or at the bar afterwards over a scotch!

Of course all of the obits are spinning it afterwards, but I believe he really meant it.

His later, 'I just meant he was boring' equivocation was silly frankly. Someone must have held a gun to his head or something.

It's like a "Great Carnak" routine:

The answer is: Free Illbay

The question is: What do you get when your supply of Illbay outpaces the demand for Illbay?

Perhaps the last big time anchor with integrity. I can hear Beethoven's Ninth playing in the background. Good night, David.

Brinkley sure won't be missed by me. That "Clinton is a bore" bit is a perfect example of what a phony he was. If he had any guts at all he wouldn't have apologized a week later to Clinton, in person. It was the only time he ever said anything remotely interesting in his much too long career, and he said it when he thought he was off the air! And then he backed off of it completely. What kind of a commentator is that? If he would have stood by what he said he would have at least looked like he had a spine.

"If I were 20 years old, I would try to do the same thing again, all of it," he told his son Joel for a New York Times interview in 1997. "I have no regrets. None at all."

Nobody get angry but I think Brinkley was an affirmative action hire from geekdom. Talk about low TV Q.

David Brinkley. I called him live on the air on Larry King many years ago to ask:

Why do you keep Sam on the air? He gets on my last nerve every week. George is so much better at the job.

He replied his mailbag was 50/50 every week asking why he didn't get rid of George Will for the same reason.

He was a class guy, in my book. Sunday news at ABC died with him.
