Update from the Recall Gray Davis Committee The Honorable Howard Kaloogian, Chairman

YES!!! You Have Caused a Political Earthquake!

Friday, June 13, 2003 – 12:30 A.M.

“You say you want a revolution… Well, you know, we all want to change the world…” The Beatles (Revolution, 1968)

Wow!

That’s the word that comes to mind when I review reports of your dedicated efforts from the last 24 hours.

Tuesday evening I put out a call to arms. I explained that the California Business Roundtable (website: www.CBRT.org) had issued a statement declaring their “UNANIMOUS” opposition to the recall effort.

This action disgusted me! I couldn’t understand – and still don’t – how an organization designed to promote economic growth, job creation and a strong business climate was using its clout and financial resources to oppose the recall effort against Gray Davis. Governor Davis has had a devastating impact on our state, the economy, our budget, our schools, our environment and our roads and highways. How any group of leading CEOs could rush to quash a populist grassroots effort to restore real leadership in place of Gray Davis dumbfounds and disturbs me.

In response to this treasonous betrayal, I asked you to contact some of the more prominent members of the California Business Roundtable to register your disappointment with them for participating in this “unanimous” vote to oppose the recall.

The response is indescribable. I’ll do my best to put it into words nonetheless.

“THOUSANDS OF PHONE CALLS AND EMAILS”

We’ve heard from so many of the companies who are members of the California Business Roundtable, and from individuals who have had contact with the member companies.

Each of them has reported the same phenomenon – they have been inundated with “thousands of phone calls and emails” from outraged citizens flooding their corporate offices. One company told us that “heads were going to roll” over the Roundtable’s actions.

Your calls, emails, letters and Faxes have stunned the management of these companies, and many are rushing to set the record straight on what their position with the recall effort truly is. I want to make sure we make the record absolutely clear on where these businesses now stand.

  _____

Safeway Corporation – Safeway has both issued a statement and also spoke to many of our supporters by telephone. Safeway explained to us that they do not support the decision made by the California Business Roundtable. Here is an excerpt from their statement emailed out to many of our supporters:

“In the case of the recall, the California Business Roundtable has taken an opposing position on the Davis recall. Safeway is a member of this particular organization -- as are many California businesses -- but we have not taken the same position. Safeway remains neutral on this issue and has not taken a position.”

Keep buying your groceries at Safeway.

  _____

Charles Schwab Corporation – The CBR inaccurately listed Charles Schwab on their list of member companies. Charles Schwab Corporation dropped their affiliation with the Roundtable in January of this year. They’ve also assured us they have not joined the campaign to oppose the Recall Gray Davis effort and promised us they will not join any recall opposition campaign.

Keep buying your stocks from Charles Schwab.

  _____

BP-Arco - British Petroleum responded with the same message as Charles Schwab. The CBR also inaccurately reported them as being a member. And also assured us that they have not joined the campaign to oppose the Recall Gray Davis effort.

Keep buying your gasoline at Arco.

  _____

Both of the above-listed companies have explained that they have expressed their extreme disappointment directly to the Roundtable for improperly reporting them as members (and by consequence, opponents of the recall effort) and wanted to make it very clear that they have not participated in any meetings or any votes to oppose the recall effort.

However, not all businesses were so quick to divorce themselves from the CBR and their recent press release.

  _____

PG&E – We’ve heard from our supporters that PG&E is standing by the decision to support Gray Davis. They vehemently oppose our recall effort and will do everything they can to defeat it.

Here is an excerpt from an email we received from one of our supporters who contacted PG&E:

“PG&E called me to tell me that PG&E agrees with the CBRT statement. Can you believe that? Wait until PG&E stockholders get an earful of THIS! No company in the State of California has more reason to want Gray Davis out of office than PG&E... or maybe there is more to the story than we know. Could it be that PG&E survived their brush with bankruptcy because they were bailed out by Gray Davis at taxpayer expense?”

Shame on PG&E for causing their stockholders to lose their investment because of Davis’ failed energy policies and then supporting him!

  _____

We have posted an updated list of companies to contact at the bottom portion of this list. Rest assured, we are leaving PG&E on the list so that each and every one of you who is a PG&E customer can let them know what you think of their political sell-out to Gray Davis. Apparently they found his handling of the Energy Crisis just fine. Let them know that the people of this state don’t agree one bit!

  _____

California Bank & Trust – We did not include California Bank & Trust in our targeted list of companies in our previous email. However, some of you took the initiative to go to the California Business Roundtable website and contact EVERY member company. [I commend you for your determination and passion – it is such an inspiration to see how many Californians are committed to restoring a better future for our state!]. At first California Bank & Trust reported that they were NOT members of the California Business Roundtable. Later they told our supporters that, in fact, they were members of the Roundtable. Here is a statement sent to one of our supporters explaining their position:

“I have confirmed that California Bank & Trust is a member of the California Business Roundtable.

The CBRT is a nonpartisan group whose focus is to promote and create a positive business environment here in California. As announced in the June 4, 2003, CBRT press release to which you referred, the Roundtable voted to adopt the statement regarding the recall.

I hope this has answered your question. Thank you, again, for contacting California Bank & Trust.”

Don’t worry! We will be publishing contact information for California Bank & Trust further down in this email so that they may hear from all our supporters throughout the state.

  _____

THEY’LL BE HEARING FROM US VIA RADIO TOO!

Besides asking you to contact these businesses that have sold out the people of our state, we asked you to make a contribution to continue to build the size of our advertising budget for our statewide radio ad campaign that begins on Tuesday of next week.

In just one day over 300 of you have already responded with an online contribution! As a result we have added more radio spots to our media buy, and our media buyers report they now have enough funds to begin adding additional stations. We should be surpassing 40 stations throughout the state in total.

If we receive an additional $10,000 in contributions by the end of the weekend, we will have reached our goal of doubling the initial size of our radio buy. This will ensure that every CEO who is a Business Roundtable Member hears our ads while they drive on our freeways, work in their offices or sit in the waiting room waiting to meet their political accomplice in the destruction of our state, Governor Gray Davis.

So please, help us reach the final goal by clicking the radio ad contribution button below:

As I explained – these radio ads are vital so that we can make a final sprint to collect as many signatures as possible before the Anti-Recall campaign led by the special interests and big businesses smears the image and reputation of our campaign. These ads will direct millions of Californians to download and sign a recall petition from our website, www.RecallGrayDavis.com.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported today that another $200,000 has been raised in the last 24-hours by recall opponents. This brings the total amount raised by the opponents of the recall campaign to over $700,000 in the last week.

The contributions include another $100,000 from Zenith Insurance Corporation and $100,000 from Stephen Bing who Mother Jones magazine describes as a “ playboy Democrat.” Bing is also a big supporter of Arnold Schwarzenegger as well.

That’s a lot of money being quickly raised to defeat our efforts. But with our final push beginning next week we are on course to collect the 1.2 million signatures we need in time to ensure a special recall election by Thanksgiving!

And as I have promised you already, I will be sending out a list of the 40+ stations where our ads will be airing (and more if we receive the target of an additional $10,000 in the next 96 hours) and also a link to a page on our website featuring all of the ads we will be broadcasting.

It’s an exciting project, and we have been working very hard on producing a good mix of ads. I want to thank you all so much for the funding that makes these ads possible. Every dollar spent on the broadcasting of these ads comes from you! This is unheard of in politics today where special interests contribute millions of dollars in “soft money” to fund political causes.

Our grassroots supporters are paying for these radio ads, and that is a fact that makes me very proud. Over 11,000 of you have already contributed to the Recall Gray Davis campaign. The average contribution is $40! And all of you are doing this – like me – as a private citizen, with no financial payment from our committee to support our efforts. Just out of the desire on all of our part to reclaim this great state and its future.

Thank you!! Now let’s get going again with our project to contact the shameful California Business Roundtable members. We need to make sure they hear from each and every one of you before they contribute tens of millions of dollars to defeat the Recall Gray Davis campaign.

DON’T STOP NOW!!!

The results of the first 24-hours of our efforts makes it clear to me that we cannot stop now. We provided you with only a portion of the list of California Business Roundtable members. Many of you have asked that we publish the contact information for other well-known members of the California Business Roundtable so we’ve listed some more companies to contact – including some well known businesses that you may currently be a customer of.

If you go to look for the full membership list on the California Business Roundtable’s website you won’t find it. They don’t want to hear from you, so they’ve taken it down as of today. Unfortunately for them, we saved the list and so has Google.

CLICK HERE for the link to see the full membership list of the California Business Roundtable – an organization that still insists that their membership has “unanimously” voted to oppose the recall.

And now, please join in – and get your friends to help out, by writing, calling, Faxing and emailing these California Business Roundtable companies listed below:

Sorry if I offended you by posting in a category that YOU don't deem appropriate. If the admin didn't think it was appropriate he/she would move it out of the category.

This is breaking news for California voters. Major corporations in our state are backing a Governor that many voters want to recall.

This is breaking news for California voters. Major corporations in our state are backing a Governor that many voters want to recall.

Breaking news is stuff like "the space shuttle is exploding" or "bio weapons p'ly found" or "Unemployment #s released, down to 5.6%" or "Davis resigns, Bustamente new governor" (not that that will ever happen).

Rather than "we heard back from BP-Arco".

It's not like the people who didn't open it in Front Page News, FR/Activism, Politics/Elections, California, et al, need another category.

Even Washington is aghast at what is happening here. Good.

Personally, I don't mind if it got moved, but it is worth noting as well, seeing as the national media is covering it.

This Recall thing has legs. Let it stand, imo. It is important for taxpayers everywhere see that We the People can say No.. In more ways then one, if need be.

In the meanwhile, We're running on fumes.. and loans ;-)

From the Sac Bee & Alexa H.Bluth yesterday

State can run until August on loans

California secured a low interest rate from investors for an $11 billion short-term loan to keep the state afloat, despite poor credit ratings and warnings that the cash-strapped state is falling out of favor with Wall Street, Controller Steve Westly announced Wednesday.

But, analysts and financial officials cautioned, the loan still is costing tens of millions of dollars in fees and interest, and California's fiscal standing remains fragile as the state barrels toward Sunday's key budget deadline with political battles raging.

"The concern in the finance community continues over California," said Claire Cohen, vice chairwoman of Fitch Investors Services. "They don't seem to be much closer to a budget agreement, and may be even further apart than they were."

California lawmakers are at odds over how to fill a budget deficit estimated to reach between $29 billion and $38 billion.

The gridlock over tax increases and program cuts has led many lawmakers to concede they will miss a seldom-met constitutional deadline Sunday and has cast doubt on the prospect of a budget deal before the July 1 start of the fiscal year.

California Highway Patrol officials on Wednesday prepared to send notices of possible layoffs to 469 of the force's 7,000 officers.

The letters, likely to be sent next week, are largely procedural at this point, and are being sent to workers in nearly every state agency as the state attempts to renegotiate employee contracts to shave hundreds of millions in costs, said Lynelle Jolley, a spokeswoman for the Department of Personnel Administration. Officials are hopeful a budget deal can be crafted without mass layoffs but have directed departments to begin the legal process.

"Obviously my hope is everything is resolved and the letters are for naught," said CHP Commissioner D.O. "Spike" Helmick.

Westly, meanwhile, delivered a rare sliver of good fiscal news Wednesday, announcing that 10 bidders made 52 bids to purchase warrants to help the state pay its bills through August. The state sold the warrants at an average 1.13 percent interest rate -- with an added $210 million in borrowing costs, less than originally expected, Westly said.

Still, he called on lawmakers to quickly pass a budget and include a new revenue source -- namely a half-cent sales tax -- to back future borrowing.

"We still need a budget, or California's long-term financial reputation and our ability to borrow in the future will be severely damaged," Westly said.

Gov. Gray Davis' finance director, Steve Peace, said the interest rate was higher than it could have been if the state had better credit -- he said Los Angeles County secured a 0.9 percent rate on a similar loan recently. He also said the state would have been unable to issue the warrants without promises of a balanced budget and backing from banks that guaranteed to pay off the loans if the state defaults.

The loans, Peace said, cost $109 million more than if the state had better credit: $25 million more in interest costs and $84 million to persuade banks to "co-sign" the loans.

"We are perilously close to losing the trust of the market," Peace said. "This was a sale that was clearly against the credit rating of the banks, not the credit rating of the state."

The warnings came as divisions intensified between Democratic and Republican lawmakers and as a new statewide poll showed little public support for sweeping tax increases.

Republican lawmakers -- whose votes are needed to meet the two-thirds requirement to approve a budget -- said they will not budge from their position against tax hikes. A new Public Policy Institute of California poll showed state residents rejected all but one tax hike -- a boost to the cost of cigarettes.

The Democratic governor's budget plan calls for a temporary half-penny sales tax increase to pay off $10.7 billion in proposed deficit bonds, as well as increases to cigarette taxes and income taxes for top earners.

According to the survey, 45 percent support a higher income tax bracket, while about half oppose the idea and more than half oppose the sales tax boost.

Davis defended his budget blueprint, despite the lackluster showing in the poll for many of its components.

"If I have to choose between maintaining our progress in public education, continuing to provide health insurance for children, and continuing to protect you against both crime and terror or raising taxes, I am going to raise taxes," Davis said.

Great job - well worth the effort -- and keep us posted.

I, for one, will never forget Gray Davis and his disrespect of His self-declared Catholic Faith and the disrespect his office showed towards Monsignour Cavanaugh and The Bishop of Sacramento when they counseled him against his support and promotion of killing California kids in utero!!
