STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

RECENT DEMONSTRATIONS IN IRAN

The United States views with great concern the use of violence against Iranian students peacefully expressing their political views. We are alarmed at reports of arrests and provocative actions taken against students by regime forces, and call upon the regime to protect the human rights of the students and to release those who have been arrested.

Iranians, like all people, have a right to determine their own destiny, and the United States supports their aspirations to live in freedom. It is our hope that the voice of the Iranian people and their aspirations for democracy and the rule of law will be heard.

I hope this means there'll be a bit more covert action in Iran. How sweet it would be for a friendly gov't to emerge there.

This statement now forces to the European nations allied with the mullahs of Iran to either keep quite, support the president or oppose him. In any circumstance the people of Iran now know their friends are and this may help bring Europe on the side of the students as well.

When this statement filters its way to the Iranian people it will land like a thunder clap!

We just told the Iranians we are behind them....

"... We just told the Iranians we are behind them...."

We just told the Iranian regime a few months ago that we're surrounding them.

We should all email President Bush urging support for the Iranian students. Let him know we are behind him and behind the Iranian dissidents. Regime change in Iran is essential, and if the Iranians do it themselves, all the better.

With a formal statement from the Whitehouse, I would think the goings-on in Iran would be more likely to get more press attention, too.

We will not interfere........this statement will be as far as we go.

There is one way of rallying the people to the mullahs and that would be if we went in to help the students.

Wishy Washy garbage.

How about a clear statement that the United States supports the democracy seeking Iranian people in their quest to rid themselves of an evil government.

They know we're behind them Dog, they're probably better informed than the average American. Pray for them my friend, it's going to take great courage but they'll win.
