US man killed in 'racist attack'

17 June 2003

BRUSSELS – An American national was beaten to death outside a Brussels nightclub and a second man was injured Sunday in what is suspected to have been a racist attack.

The two US businessmen were attacked outside the Cotton Club on Boulevard Emile Jacqmain slightly before 5am Sunday morning by six to seven aggressors.

The motive for the attack remains unknown although the theory that the attack was racially motivated is being examined.

The owner of the club was questioned in relation with the incident Monday, however he is not known to have had any direct involvement in the attack.

Anti-US sentiment in Belgium has been encouraged in recent weeks with US dismay at Belgium’s stance against the Iraqi conflict as well as Donald Rumsfeld’s threat of moving Nato HQ out of Brussels if the controversial law of universal competence was not amended.

The war crimes law had targeted figures such as Colin Powell, former US President George Bush Senior and, most recently, allied forces commander General Tommy Franks on charges of crimes against humanity.

A racist crime at the Cotton Club? There's a joke in here somewhere...

and how exactly is this racist? The racial profiles of the parties involved would help.

This can't be true. Isn't Belgium home to the seat of government for the enlightened EU?

"FYI Brussels is full of aggressive Arabs."

That is very true. Indeed, I'd say "radical and aggressive Arabs." Because there are a bunch of them. You will be seeing the same thing in France very shortly.

Time for Belgium, and perhaps Continental "Old Europe" to go on the State Department's Advisory List.

That will kill tourism in Europe.

Maybe the Americans who were attacked were Jewish, and the attackers were Arabs. Maybe that's why they're saying it might be "racist".

Or the victims could have been white, and beaten by black Belgians (from the Belgian Congo).

This is a great idea.

The perverts in charge of Belgium hate Americans, and their constant hate talk re Americans has resulted in this brutal death.

It is time for the state department to declare Belgium and much of old Europe as potentially dangerous for Americans to visit. As you noted, that will cut the tourist and business $s!

I will look around. But I suspect they will cover it up or downplay it as much as they can.

Racist? Is 'Belgian' a race? This was a hate crime, yes. I don't see how it's 'racist' though. I ALSO fail to see how the Belgian government inciting violence against Americans is gonna cause President Bush to relent on stopping the funding for the new NATO headquarters....but then again, I failed to understand how inciting hatred and violence against Americans would give Gerhardt just enough popularity to squeak through a win last fall, either.

Nice biased article. Someone has attacked someone else, so we theorize that it must have been for "racist" motives, 'cause everyone is a racist. (On second thought, every white guy is considered a racist, so I guess we know the race of the attacker.)

Then, the victim was an American, so we can throw in our "anti-US sentiment" talk along with our grudges against Rummy and the rest of the administration.

Journalism is an easy job, really--provided, of course, that you are determined to do it the left way.

First: "American" is not a "race."

Second: Belgium is "The Littlest Weasel," being one of the NATO countries to that twice tried to block defensive aid to Turkey (before both the first and second Gulf Wars).

Third: Belgium is one of the worst countries in the world. It's run by a bunch of child molesters (look up the Marc Dutroux trial online if you have a strong stomach). You should avoid that little [excrement]hole if you value your life. You should avoid it on principle, too.
