Presidential secretary (Al-tikriti something or other) not a family member. :(

They're from the same town. They're not cousins?

Mahmud may have information on the fate of Saddam and his sons, and he is thought to have details of Iraq's alleged weapons programs. U.S. officials have said they want to try Mahmud for war crimes or crimes against humanity for activities associated with his senior position in the Iraqi regime.

This is a big fish!

This guy knows alot, "may have information" my @$$! He knows if Saddam is dead or alive. And he does know what the status is of WMDs in Iraq. No bones about it.

You're assuming this guy, loyal as loyal can be, is just going to roll over and talk. I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath.

He'll talk. We have ways of making him talk. He'll wish that Barney and the Teletubbies never existed by the time we're through with him. You'll see.

VOA: US Captures No. 4 on Iraqi Most-Wanted List
Meredith Buel
Pentagon
AP
Abid Hamid Mahmud
A U.S. official says the number four man on the most wanted list of Iraqis, Abid Hamid Mahmud, has been taken into custody. Mr. Mahmud was the personal secretary for ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

U.S. Central Command also describes him as being a national security advisor and one of the few people the former Iraqi leader completely trusted.

Mr. Mahmud is the highest-ranking figure on the U.S. military's list to be captured so far. The only people listed above him are Saddam Hussein and his two sons.

The capture came as coalition forces in Iraq have launched more than 50 raids in recent days and detained hundreds of Iraqis in an effort to wipe out sporadic resistance.

Major General Ray Ordierno briefed reporters at the Pentagon via satellite from Tikrit.

The commander of the Army's 4th Infantry Division says the raids will continue as long as there is armed resistance against coalition forces.

"Our soldiers are involved in almost daily contact with non-compliant forces, former regime members and common criminals," he said. "To defeat these attacks and to continue to improve the security and stability within our area, the task force is conducting search and attack missions, presence patrols and raids to disarm, defeat and destroy hostile forces as well as to capture the former regime members."

General Ordierno says the raids are helping to stabilize areas north of Baghdad.

He says in the latest raid U.S. soldiers discovered large amounts of cash and detained senior Iraqi military officials.

"Soldiers from 122 infantry conducted two raids on separate farm houses outside of Tikrit seizing $8.5 million (US), 300 to 400 million Iraqi dinars and English pounds and Euros yet to be counted," he explained. " In addition we seized a large cache of jewel and gems estimated to be worth over a million dollars in value."

General Ordierno says soldiers also confiscated late-model Russian-made night-vision goggles, sniper rifles and uniforms of Saddam Hussein's personal guard.

This guy knows alot! Lets hope he talks.

In all fairness - look what we did to the Ruskies in Afghanistan in the 80's. We supplied Osama Bin Laden with arms and trained his men to fight Russia - a lot worse than what they did to us.

We helped Bin Laden kill way more Russians than they helped Saddam kill Americans, so we really don't have a lot of room to condemn them.

The events you mention happened back when the USSR was the mortal enemy of the USA, and we were doing all we could to keep them isolated and bankrupt -- a strategy that ultimately worked. If they want to go back to those days, they should keep helping our enemies like Saddam. If they don't, they should cut it out right now.

Believe me - I was in no way condoning their actions - in fact - this is a great opportunity for them to get on our good side. I'm just trying to look at this objectively - and try to realize that the rest of the world is also watching.

Back in the mid 80's the Russians were not our mortal enemies. Gorbachev and Regan were starting to become fairly good buddies - and the ice was beginning to melt.

I'm just saying this doesn't put us in the ideal position to be too critical of the Russians when they can just push it back in our face. After all, it only happened about 15 years ago.

Give us a break. We were in cold war with the USSR at that time.

The Russians were supposed to be our friends the past couple of years.

Do you think you are talking to the history deprived and dumbed down ones?

It's nice of you to reply. I guess I'll have to respectfully disagree. Reagan made his mark as a tough anti-communist who finally brought down their system -- by seeing that the two systems (communism vs. freedom) are not morally equivalent. Our system is morally superior, and we were well within our rights to bring their system down. Ordinary citizens in the old USSR should be glad we did it (and many of them are).

Yes, we can be critical of the Russians if they are helping Saddam. When we were arming Afgans, we were helping to fight the worst tyrrany in the world at the time and there's no need for us to apologize. If Russia now helps Saddam, then they're aiding an enemy of freedom -- that isn't right, they should be ashamed of themselves, and we have every right to treat them as an enemy if they don't apologize and change their actions right away. (Ditto for France.)

There's no moral equivalence between what we've done and what they've done, IMHO.

Anyway, I love the FreeRepublic because it's a place where thoughtful people can say what is on their mind and have a civil exchange of ideas, even when we don't always agree.

Take care.

Where can find an updated list of those who have been captured, or have turned themselves in? (from the 55 most wanted)

I have the scoreboard, and cross off those who have been caught, but I don't know if I've missed anyone.

Thank you thank you thank you. This is a big get for us record keepers too. We now have a confirm on a card of each value. That is while not of one suit we now have at least one A through 2.

Of course we are still looking for our first four of a kind. Seems to be plenty of possibilities for this, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Q. Should happen pretty soon.
