Dean Says Son Charged With Burglary

MONTPELIER, Vt. - Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean said Friday that his 17-year-old son and four other teenagers were cited in a burglary for attempting to steal liquor from a Vermont country club.
Dean, who canceled several campaign appearances, said his son, Paul, and teammates on the high school hockey team apparently were discovered early Friday morning at the Burlington Country Club by a police officer on routine patrol. Dean said it was his understanding that his son would be charged as an accessory.
"Children do stupid things and this is one of them," Dean said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from a Minnesota airport where he was awaiting a flight back to Vermont.
"I'm cutting short my next two days on the campaign trail to deal with a family problem that I consider to be a serious problem," he said.
Art Cyr, a detective in Burlington, Vt., said the incident occurred between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. Friday, when the police officer spotted Paul Dean seated at the wheel of a car near the country club and questioned him, learning that the burglary was in progress.
Cyr said he believed Dean's role was to be the driver while the teen's four friends went to a storage area at the club to get the liquor. The teenagers were ordered to appear in court to answer charges on Aug. 5. In Paul Dean's case, the charge would be accessory to burglary.
In a statement released later in the day, Dean said, "I understand that this matter is being handled by the state's attorney, and I hope the press and the public will respect the privacy of my family particularly of my son during this difficult time."
The Democratic candidate and former Vermont governor had been in St. Paul, Minn., for a Democratic meeting, and had planned to attend a forum in Iowa on Saturday.
Dean said he still would travel to Washington Sunday for an appearance on NBC's "Meet The Press," but he had not decided whether to participate in the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition candidate forum in Chicago and a subsequent fund-raiser there.
The candidate planned to go forward with his formal announcement and campaign kickoff on Monday in Burlington.
Dean said because Paul, whom he described as an "honor student," is captain of his school hockey team, the incident probably would have become public.
"When you're 17 years old, you get to make bad decisions and this was one," Dean said.
Yup, they should be deported to Maine. The Black Bears could use them.
In a related story, Dallas Stars goalie Marty Turco (who grew up across the river from me) wowed Dallas law enforcement recently when he personally apprehended a burglar at his Texas residence. The perp grabbed his booty and fled down the street only to be grabbed, manhandled, and humiliated by the future of the NHL goalie squad. Turco held the suspect until police arrived. What did the suspect attempt to steal? Turco's beer, which was stored in the garage.
The moral of the story? NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, steal beer from a Canadian.....
Only sometimes. Kids raised well by involved parents rarely go bad.
Dean wants to govern the nation but apparently cannot govern his own family.
I'm sure the liberal media will do just that, unlike the way they treated the Bush twins' problems.
No, he's not sure. There isn't a single division one hockey player on heroin. The physical requirements necessary wouldn't allow it.
A cop shines a light in his eyes and asks why he's parked, with the motor running, in front of a very locked clubhouse.
Maybe the perp didn't want his little friends to walk home.
After all, beer is heavy, ya know...
Dubya's daughters were stalked by the Big Media circus. Watching Dean's kid being tried for a few felonies should be on Court TV - at least...
This is a bit more serious and it will be interesting to see what the leftist rags have to say.
I hope good conservatives can realize that Dean is the candidate, not his son, and leave this alone.
Some class on our part will contrast with the RATs disgusting behavior and raise the image of conservatives in the public eye.
It ain't a felony unless you get caught - eh?
Dean, who canceled several campaign appearances, said his son, Paul, and teammates on the high school hockey team
we find that all four of them
were on the hockey team!
Yes, but it should not mean that Dean is somehow necessarily a bad parent or bad person.
That's fine - but felonies? Maybe it'll be left to a small paragraph in this weekend's Parade Magazine...
The best thing you could do for your cousin would be to realize that he is an addict becasue of his own behavior, not becasue of liberal cops & politicians being lax on law enforcement.
Hopefully his rehab is teaching him this lesson, but the only way he can ever recover is to take responsibility for his own actions.
But, then again, it may. The perp didn't know the law? C'mon...
Dean was not the perp.
