We had a water purification company in my battalion while in the NJ National Guard. He's right, it aint glamorous but, they were appreciated. Most of the time they bivouac away from everybody and are left to fend for themselves. A lonely, unappreciated job.

Some of the earlier water purification units were developed by the Engineer Research and Development Laboratory. When they were shipped to the field, they had "ERDL" stenciled on the crates. Not knowing what the acronym stood for, troops soon referred to the units as "erdolators"........a name that stuck with them for many years.

I was there with SFC Martinez and 1LT (now CPT)Jessup. You spend so much time in garrison with purifiers that don't seem to have anything to do. You begin to believe that the unit isn't really needed. But whin the war kicked off, we were on or directly behind the front lines. The "Water Dogs", setting up and immediately producing product, were a force to be reckoned with.
