Prostitute Survey
NEW YORK (AP) June 23, 2003 Street prostitutes in police custody suffer rape, assault, sexual extortion and harassment by officers, according to a survey that interviewed 30 sex workers.
The Urban Justice Center interviewed 30 sex workers from Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx. More than 60 percent of the participants reported daily interactions with police that went beyond arrests to include sexual situations, violence and threats.
Police spokesmen said they had not seen the report and could not immediately comment.
Juhu Thukral, director of the Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center, said such police operations "violate the human rights of the city's most vulnerable population." She also said such treatment of prostitutes contributes to a system of "revolving door justice," doing little to solve the long term problem.
Two men and 28 women were interviewed in the study. Their ages ranged from 19 to 53; 21 had children.
Some of the prostitutes interviewed said they were never offered services like counseling. The majority of the participants were homeless or in unstable housing situations.
The report makes recommendations to the city, including a reexamination of targeting prostitutes during street sweeps and an intensive case management system to provide needed health care and counseling services.

There's one way to stop street prostitution (which would take away a large amount of cover for underage prostitution), and that is to legalize it. It's working in Nevada, in Australia, etc.

People around here know I fix TVs and VCRs in my spare time, and invariably I get pestered for advice on how to remove stuck tapes in their VCRs, how to get rid of static on their stereo systems, etc. Occupational hazard, I'm afraid.

Because hookers is derogatory and takes away the dignity and pride of a person who gives oral sex in a bathroom stall.

It's working in Nevada, in Australia, etc. ,,, I'm in New Zealand. Tomorrow our Parliament will go thru the second reading of the Prostitution Amendment Bill. This is an attempt to legalise the sex industry here. It's controversial and there's doubts as to whether it will be passed. My interest in it is minimal but I'm surprised all the professional carers don't see this move as the government's endorsement of the exploitation of womyn.

If prostitution is illegal, it should be illegal for both parties to the transaction. Harrassement of prostitutes constitutes clear discrimination against (mostly) women and a likely big dose of misogyny as well.

There is one way to stop the abuse. They should get into another line of work.

I don't know about Australia, but in Nevada, legal prostitution is only in a few (less populated) counties. Outside of these specific counties, they still have the same problems associated with street prostitution everywhere else.

never offered services like counselingSo our folks in blue are social workers now? Like the protitutes have any interest in changing their ways, when that's the case there are resources available. These folks love to whine, tell them not to get their fishnets in a twist.

Where does your link say anything about Soros and what does it have to do with the validity of the article.
