Not all Muslims support Nawash (Virginia 8th District RINO Master Plan)

Not all Muslims support Nawash

I am an Arab American, a Muslim and a former Republican precinct captain.

During Kamal Nawash's failed bid for office against Del. Brian Moran, D-Alexandria, I was asked to help. I refused.

Other members of the GOP were surprised that I would not support a fellow Arab/Muslim-American. My response was that I would remain silent out of respect for my party affiliation.

Mr. Nawash is again running for office, this time for the state Senate in the 31st District.

When he put me on his e-mail list again, I asked to be removed, but he threatened to call the police and accused me of scaring his office manager.

In the same e-mail, he said he wanted to meet with me and his local fellow Palestinian-American imam.

The behavior of this man is consistent with uneducated eastern Arab villagers. He clearly has very poor judgment and does not know how to handle a voter who does not want to vote for him.

In the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, there was a rush by the Arab-American and Muslim-American community to get more representation in government.

But our driving force should be service to the community and love of country, not a superficial representation by a superficial candidate.

The best interests of the 31st District will be served by re-electing Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple, D-Arlington.

ASHRAF SABRIN Falls Church

Shame on you!

Looks like she's done real well with the pro-aborts. Does Virginia really need another term of this abortion rights woman?

Why would any Republican support a democrat. Is he insane?

N.Va. Muslims Raising a Voice In Area Politics
New PAC, Surprise Candidate Are Part of Effort to Get Involved

By Michael Laris

Muslim activists in Northern Virginia have launched a political action committee to help elect officials who will halt what they call rights abuses associated with the nation's war on terror.

Mukit Hossain, a telecommunications entrepreneur who emigrated from Bangladesh and lives near Sterling, said he hopes to create a Muslim powerhouse with sufficient funds to sway local elections in Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties, as well as state races, in November.

Hossain said the new PAC, called the Platform for Active Civil Empowerment, was inspired by last year's raids by federal officials on Muslim organizations or households in Herndon, Leesburg and other areas. The raids were part of an investigation of possible financial ties to terrorists. No charges have been filed following the March 2002 raids. U.S. officials say the investigation is ongoing.

Any Loudoun County residents care to chime in? The activists claim to have had an influence on elections in Loudoun County. Does anyone see it differently?

I'm in Loudoun County and I'm on the Republican Committee's Executive Committee, so I follow local politics very closely.

Yes there was a big influence by the activists in the Loudoun County elections... in the Democratic Party. The Democrats foolishly (IMO) used a very closed process that limited voter participation by holding a caucus to select its nominees for the Board of Supervisors. The caucus was held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (yes, that's one hour) in Leesburg (yes, only one polling location) last Tuesday, June 10. The filing deadline for candidates was noon that same day.

The only contested race for Board of Supervisors Democratic Party nominations was in the Potomac District; in the other districts, the party's "annointed" candidate was the only one who filed, so that candidate automatically received the nomination (surprise, surprise). However, Afeefa Syeed, director of the Al Faith Academy private muslim school in Herdon, VA, threw a monkey-wrench into the Potomac District race. She filed just prior to the noon deadline on Tuesday, then beat the "annointed" candidate, David E. Poisson, in the party canvas. The final vote count was 11 votes for Syeed and 4 votes for Poisson.

As Poisson was out of town that day he didn't call his friends to get out the vote for himself... so Syeed won.

Thanks for the information. Where my concern lies is with the motivation of the activists. According to the WP, they decided to get involved in response to Homeland Security raids on the "charities" in Herndon where the FBI was looking for Al-Qaeda connections. If their numbers reach the point so as to affect elections and policy, I see a problem.

Word is that Syeed's got $65000 in her campaign war chest. Typically a candidate for this race spends $25-30,000. So yeah, it's a worry.

Sorry for the late response. I have been out of state. I agree with gieriscm. Money and actions talk. The Republicans are in disarray, Snob zoners vs. smart growth residents, coupled with some fairly petty feuds, have reduced the Republican side to a bowl of jello. The dims have their problems as well. Muslims are good fund raisers all over the country. That is not necessarily a good thing for any of us.
