Chelsea Clinton, 23, and Ian Klaus, 22, are back on, we hear.

The former First Daughter was said to have wanted to cool things down with her Oxford University boyfriend.

"She wanted some space," says a source. "But after a while, she realized how much he meant to her."

The couple finished their final exams last week and have been celebrating ever since.

We'll have to see whether Klaus, a Californian, follows her to New York, where she's due to take a $120,000-a-year consulting job at McKinsey & Co.

Chelsea Clinton called new 'JFK Jr.'

LONDON - It's a long road from gawky adolescent to twenty-something sex symbol, but Vanity Fair magazine says Chelsea Clinton has made the transition.

The magazine pronounces the daughter of former President Bill Clinton ``the new J.F.K. Jr.,'' referring to the good-looking son of former President John F. Kennedy, killed when his private plane crashed in 1999.

In an article that exhaustively analyzes Chelsea Clinton's time at Oxford University and her previous, more sheltered life in the White House and the Arkansas governor's mansion, Vanity Fair says she's recently grown more flamboyant and more comfortable with her public profile.

The change ``has done what no one would have thought possible years ago, when Chelsea was a girl with braces in billowing Laura Ashley dresses,'' the article says. ``Chelsea Clinton has become a sex symbol.''

The story appears in Vanity Fair's June issue, which goes on sale Friday.

``Most presidents' children, they sink like stones once their parent leaves office,'' Vanity Fair quotes presidential historian Gil Troy as saying. ``But this is a different age.''

Clinton reportedly had trouble adjusting to British life when she arrived last year, writing in Talk magazine that it was ``hard to be abroad'' after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and complaining of anti-Americanism.

Since then, she appears to have grown more comfortable, and often is photographed at hip London hangouts or with Hollywood celebrities. Her romance with American Rhodes scholar Ian Klaus is a favorite topic for tabloid newspapers.

The magazine suggested Clinton might be eyeing a future in public life. She declined to be interviewed for the story, and when asked during a photo shoot whether she had political aspirations, she said, ``I'm just trying to be a student.''

Entertainment Tonight reported this story last night, with almost exactly the same wording, as a voice read the text and they flashed file photos of the couple.

What happened, did a press release get sent out and, as usual, the media just regurgitates the talking points?

The funniest thing I've read about Chelsea was in The Onion. Man on the street says: "Well, you know her boyfriend won't be getting any oral sex." As long as she, like her mother, believes eating-ain't-cheating rules, then the boyfriend should be content.

Not really. The big consulting firms are largely staffed with recent college grads and recent MBA grads. They are working under the supervision of more experienced people, but the junior ones do all the real work. For holders of MBAs and comparable graduate degrees from top schools, $120,000 wouldn't be an unusual starting salary.

I don't what kind of graduate work/degree Chelsea holds, but she has an undergrad degree from Stanford, and some kind of graduate work at Oxford, so on paper she qualifies for the job and the salary IF her grades were very good. It's mighty doubtful that she qualifies in terms of technical knowledge (most young consulting firm employees have top notch concrete skills in either computer systems or finance, and some in commercial law), but presumably she makes up for it in terms of her ability to get rich and powerful people to cooperate with the firm.

You make it sound as though only democrats do this...practically everyone that is rich and influential greases someone's wheels to get favors, it's what power and money is all about...it's been going on for ever.

Was the real point of this to tell us about their relationship or how much she is going to make? And it it's the latter, isn't that like really tacky. Hell, if I worked at McDonald's I wouldn't even discuss my salary with my parents.

But whatever the point...really...are we supposed to care?

Is Ian Klaus the male version of Hillary!? He seems to have nothing going for him so he's attatched himself to Chelsea like a tick.

Very astute. Ian wants to get into office. Why else would he want to hang out with creepy Clinton kid?

Months ago, when the affair was all over the tabloids, we looked up Ian's records....he graduated from Washington U in St. Louis, where he seemed to major in writing papers with a very liberal slant on gays, South Africa, etc. He's as obnoxious as the Clintons, the little twerp, and his parents have mucho bucks, guaranteeing him a slot in the limousine liberal lineup.
