New "Bushism" Slang Word Sweeps Japan! "KAKKATE KOI!" ("OK, Bring Them On"): Japanese Press
Nikkan Gendai News ^ | 4 July 2003 | AmericanInTokyo

President George Bush's threat and taunt of terrorists to 'try their hand against the United States' has been highlighted, above the fold, in the Japanese press.

The newest buzzword sweeping Japan in connection with Bush and his image as a 'tough guy, no nonsense on terrorism dude' is:

"KAKKATE KOI!" or "OK, BRING IT ON THEN"

Directly transliterated, it means, "If you are going to come after me, then come on!"

This phrase is often heard in tough, burly precincts of blue collar Japan just before fists are hurled.

The "bring it on" comment, like the "axis of evil" remark, will catch in the throat of world journalists and be regurgitated endless times. But phrases like "death to America" and "death to the Jews," coming from other parts of the world, seem to go down easy.

Don't kid yourself. The Japanese media and the book industry in Japan is VERY VERY anti-Bush. If you go into a major bookstore in Tokyo and look at the books up in the front on disply in "Current Topics", one third are on Bush and literally 90% of them are anti-Bush and most have covers with 'manga' or photos of Bush that are very unflattering. They have pictured him in the mind of the common Japanese as 'mad', war mongering and stupid.

(They'll change their tune when North Korean starts with high explosive nuke testing along the Yellow Sea in the next few months, though.) All the stuff, by Ritter or that a Academy Award dude making fun of Bush are translated into Nihongo and printed and out on the shelves like (snap) THAT!

"They prefer mamby pamby boot lickers for president."

Such as Jimmy Carter, for example? He's clearly the president of choice for the enemies of America, of freedom, and of democracy. Carter prefers the accolades of the international Leftist elites to all three of the above, and I'd tell him that to his face.

I was just being hopeful for a while. I gotta give Bush credit, he stays right on course no matter what people say no wonder his approval rating is still in the 60's. Let's just pray it stays there for 2004.

yes, 'koi' is a Japanese fish (carp), however 'koi' is also the imperative form of the verb 'kuru' (come). To 'get out of here is opposite 'ikke!', the imperative of 'iku' (to go). 'koi' also is the word for 'affection'. all of these 'koi's' are spelled differently in Japanese, i.e. homynyms.
