New "Bushism" Slang Word Sweeps Japan! "KAKKATE KOI!" ("OK, Bring Them On"): Japanese Press
Nikkan Gendai News ^ | 4 July 2003 | AmericanInTokyo

President George Bush's threat and taunt of terrorists to 'try their hand against the United States' has been highlighted, above the fold, in the Japanese press.

The newest buzzword sweeping Japan in connection with Bush and his image as a 'tough guy, no nonsense on terrorism dude' is:

"KAKKATE KOI!" or "OK, BRING IT ON THEN"

Directly transliterated, it means, "If you are going to come after me, then come on!"

This phrase is often heard in tough, burly precincts of blue collar Japan just before fists are hurled.

Wasn't there a song from the 1920's that went, "Ka-K-Katie don't cry!"

I may add that to my vocabulary.

Or, I may rethink that idea.

ko (rhymes w/ 'go') i.e. long 'o'; and then long 'e'. Said together rapidly.

Anyone remember the movie about Patton with George C. Scott?

Well, to the chagrin of a few folks that I know, my favorite part was when he slapped that soldier who was in the hospital with [combat fatigue?].

Patton thought he had no business whining about his problems when REAL men were lying around him wounded from battle. . . .

I loved it. Too bad he was made to apologize.

BAKA!!

That's my favorite word, probably because I relate to it so well. I'm such a baka! (I thought it only had 1 k, though. That's how I've always seen it used.)

[ps, for all you reading this who have no clue what "baka" is, it means idiot.]

Oh, is that what translates into english as 'frosted bun' or something like that? Oh yeah, type that into "Google". What you'll get back has nothing to do with pastry...

Actually, should be only one 'k', as in 'baka', (if it is the word I believe you are wanting to use).

A good addition to that is 'baka yaro!', or as they say (insult) in the Kansai area in Osaka: "aho!" (pronounced the same as the southern Arizona town of "Ajo")

The "bring it on" comment, like the "axis of evil" remark, will catch in the throat of world journalists and be regurgitated endless times.

If that is the case ... kakkate koi!

Saying something "Bushy" is an excellent way of making all the world aware of a fact. We all know that Iran, North Korea and, formerly, Iraq, are evil and form an axis--thanks to that "Bushy" remark!

This is a good book. It's also available on audio cassette. The author will be on C-Span's Booknotes program later this month.
