Well, that explains it. I took Grand Central to work today (to LI) and saw all kinds of NYPD bomb squad trucks going west bound.

Can I be first? I bet terrorists rented a car to make a car bomb, and the new guy forgot about the bomb in it and brought it back?

Do you remember the 1st WTC bombers? After the bomb went off, one of them went back to the rental agency and asked for his deposit back because the van was stolen. Unfortunately for him, the cops had already IDed the van via its VIN (numbers on the axle, I do believe).

Is this at JFK Airport?

I don't know. If police activity could be observed on the Grand Central this morning, maybe not.

Fox News Alert banner is covering up much of the action.

MSNBC is also showing this---their banner isn't as obnoxious.

CNN also showing this.

This has nothing to do with this story, but I remember about 12 years ago I was in New York City with my dad and we asked our Arab speaking taxi driver to take us to the Avis dealer at La Guardia. The guy ended up taken us to Hertz. He insisted that we told him "Hertzes" instead of Avis. Maybe someone is encountering same the problem now. Just a theory based on my experience with Arabs and rental dealerships in New York City.

Area being evacuated of people, so maybe there is something in the rental car.

This car rental agency is about two blocks away from LaGuardia Airport. The airport is just across the bay from Shea Stadium and about a one minute flight away from midtown manhattan. You can see the Empire State Building from the terminal. Also this airport's landing path takes planes low and slow over the Grand Central Parkway. Any plane coming in would be a turkey shoot for a stinger missile and may even be damaged by a potent car bomb exploded on the parkway beneath it. Im on pass today, so I have no further info at this time.
