Life in jail for man who kept sex slaves in bunker

Judge rejects plea for leniency and calls retired handyman a sick coward who should die in prison for his reign of terror

SYRACUSE (New York) - A judge sentenced a retired handyman to 18 years to life in prison on Tuesday, calling the defendant 'a sick coward' and 'an evil man' for keeping five women as sex slaves in a concrete bunker.

John Jamelske, 68, pleaded guilty last month to kidnapping five women and girls and holding them from 1988 till he was caught this year at his home in DeWitt, a Syracuse suburb.

None of the victims appeared in court for his sentencing, but prosecutors read excerpts from statements that each of them submitted to the court. A 16-year-old victim wrote that she almost gave up hope as she was raped daily.

'Please lock him up and never allow him to perpetrate on any young, innocent girls again,' she said. 'He is an old, sick man, and he is never going to change. I hope you die in the cold, cement cell, like you wanted us to do.'

Another woman, according to a statement by her attorney, wanted him 'sentenced to the foulest dungeon in creation for all of eternity'.

Onondaga County Judge Anthony Aloi ignored a plea for leniency from Jamelske's lawyer. 'You are a sick coward. You are an evil man,' he told Jamelske. 'You are a kidnapper and rapist, a master manipulator of people and the truth, but your reign of terror is over.

'There is no doubt in my mind that you should die in prison for what you have done to these five women.'

Jamelske cried in court and apologised. 'I'm sorry for what I did and how it affected everyone. God bless all of them.'

He told the authorities he began seeking out women in 1988 after his wife became bedridden with cancer and was unable to satisfy his sexual urges. She died in 1999.

He was arrested in April after a teenager, whom he held captive for six months, sneaked a telephone call to her sister when he took her out on errands. After his arrest, police identified four other women who said he abducted and raped them dating back to 1988.

The victims ranged in age from 13 to 53 and were held captive for between two months and three years.

They have said that Jamelske made them keep diaries detailing their sexual encounters, had them do senseless tasks and tricked them into believing others were involved, that they would be sold as slaves on the Internet and that they had no chance of escape.

The bunker - which will be demolished next month - consists of two rooms, each measuring 3.6m by 3.6m, with a 2.1m ceiling. It was accessible only through a steel door in the basement wall.

Each count carried a maximum penalty of 25 years to life in prison. -- AP

This case cries out for the death penalty. There doesn't appear to be any doubt he did it.

I honestly cannot think of a punishment that fits this crime. Nothing I can think of is lingering or painful enough.

These girls were released? Kept at the same time? I hate these stories that are so short on details that explain the extent of the crime.

How about - Lock him into a cell for the rest of his life with a large screen TV on the wall playing the collected speeches of Bill & Hillary, running in an endless loop?

Death penalty is the only punishment fitting for this sicko. He isn't the least bit sorry, and if let out he would do it again. How horrifying.

Death penalty. And I'm someone who is more restrictive about that punishment than most conservatives.

This is the first I heard about this case. . .

. . .there seems to be no end to the perverted insanity that is out there; some of it attempting to cloak itself in 'good fun' ie the 'paintgunning' down of naked women. . .

Just hope we do not here about THIS sicko; advertising on the web for companionship. . .

He deserves the worst punishment possible. . .

(. . .and I cannot fathom how he carried this out . . .and of for years without discovery.)

Turning his group of victims lose on him with cattle prods comes to mind. Or Loreena Bobbit.

Then a Slow death. Brutal death. Agonizingly painful death.

Perhaps he was just following a "peaceful" religion:

Is having a Slave (girl) for sex nowdyas is allowed? (Ask The Imam)

Islam ensured that the slave girl's duties were not restricted merely to domestic chores but also gave her master permission to copulate with her. This concession created an atmosphere of love and harmony between the slave girl and her master. Islam thereby raised the status of the war captive-maidens close to that of wives. It was a psychological cure to her grief-stricken heart, being deprived of her family and thrown into the hands of a strange society.

The First World War in 1914 was a clear reflection of the evils involved in setting captive women free to roars about in a strange society with strange surroundings. During that war, German and English women prisoners on either side were set free to roam the streets with no-one to feed them. The result was obvious that they resorted to other unrefined and uncivilised methods of income on the streets. Thus, it is evident that the Islamic treatment of women prisoners of war was conducive towards better social relations and led to the refinement of their overall social lives.

One question that still remains is whether slavery still legally prevails anywhere in the Islamic world and whether it can be successfully implemented in this age. Well, there is no prevalence of lawful slavery in the Islamic world today and it would be difficult to implement it because of the stringent conditions attached to it. Firstly, the prisoners have to be captured in 'Jihaad' in the true sense of the word. Then again, If true 'Jihaad' did break out somewhere, there are still a number of other laws and conditions to abide by which are far too stringent for any Islamic country in the world to abide by in this time and age when people's personal gains and whims and desire are being given preference to over Islamic Law. According to Islamic Law, captive female prisoners are also part and parcel of the booty. One fifth of the booty has to be first distributed to the needy, orphans, etc. The remaining four-fifths should then be distributed among the soldiers who participated in the war. The distribution can only take effect after the booty is brought into Islamic territory. The Ameerul-Mu'mineen (Head of the Islamic State) remains the guardian of the female prisoners until he allocates them to the soldiers. Only after a soldier has been allotted a slave girl, and made the owner of her, will she become his lawful possession. After she spends a period called 'Istibraa', which is the elapse of one menstrual period, It becomes permissible for her owner to have relations with her. After possession of the slave too there are a number of other laws that affect the master and slave. There is hardly any Islamic country today that can abide to all these conditions, with the result that it is quite difficult to implement slavery in this time and age.

THIS would appear to be a case where Uday's shredder could be put to use... feed this fiend to it an inch a day for a month. Then staunch the flow of blood but NO pain meds...

The story, or possibly others I've seen on this topic, says that the kidnappings dated back to 88, but that the longest a victim was kept was 3 years or so.

That means that a number of his victims were released or escaped and presumably did nothing to bring him to justice.

The press has been dancing around this issue, but there is something really weird about at least some of these women.

That's an awfully harsh and intolerant judgment to render just because you apparently don't agree with or share the fellow's sexual orientation!

YOW!

I've never even heard of this case. Sick as it is, it strikes me a sicker yet for this invertebrate to say this:

"Jamelske cried in court and apologised. 'I'm sorry for what I did and how it affected everyone. God bless all of them.'"

What the hell is it that is making every one of these animals a sorrowful believer in the Lord? Hell, this guy is making out to be Tiny Tim and he's done what he has done?

I oppose the death penalty on principle, but this guy begs for an exception.

That's more than a little unfair to the rape victims. Each one of them went to the police after they were released, but none of them could tell the police where they were being held. The sick MF would drive them far from his (I think long island) home and release them in the middle of nowhere. Four times this happened and the vicitms could give no information about where they had been because they were kept underground the entire time.
