HIV Cases Climb Among Gay, Bisexual Men in U.S.

The number of gay and bisexual men diagnosed with HIV (news - web sites), the virus that causes AIDS (news - web sites), climbed for the third consecutive year in the United States in 2002, fueling fears that the disease might be poised for a major comeback in this high-risk group.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites), which reported the finding on Monday at the 2003 National HIV Prevention Conference in Atlanta, also revealed that AIDS diagnoses overall had risen 2.2 percent to 42,136 last year.

"The AIDS epidemic in the United States is far from over," said Dr. Harold Jaffe, director of the CDC's National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention.

An estimated 850,000 to 950,000 Americans have the AIDS virus. AIDS killed 16,371 people across the nation last year, about 6 percent fewer than in 2001, according to the CDC.

Although U.S. health officials have been preaching HIV prevention to all Americans, they have become particularly concerned in recent years by an apparent resurgence of infections among gay and bisexual males.

HIV diagnoses among men who have sex with men surged 7.1 percent last year, according to data collected by the CDC from 25 states that have long-standing HIV reporting. New diagnoses in this high-risk group have increased 17.7 percent since 1999, while remaining stable in other vulnerable communities.

Jaffe cautioned, however, that the jump in HIV diagnoses could have been caused by increases in the number of gay and bisexual males being tested for the virus and was not proof that this group was being infected at a faster rate.

STANDARD TESTS

Standard HIV tests cannot tell when a person was infected with the virus, leaving open the possibility that HIV was contracted many years before being detected.

That could change in the coming months as the CDC implements a new HIV tracking system, which is based on a blood test that it says can determine whether a person had been infected with HIV in the previous six months.

CDC officials said the new surveillance strategy, was prompted by a need for more precise data on HIV infections and trends. About 40,000 new HIV infections are reported in the nation each year.

Since the AIDS virus first surfaced in 1981, estimates of new HIV cases have been based on the predictable length of time -- usually 10 years -- that elapsed between an initial infection and the onset of AIDS symptoms.

But the development of antiretroviral drugs has slowed the progression of AIDS and made it more difficult to predict when a person contracted HIV.

"It will provide us timely information on HIV transmission that is occurring now," said Dr. Robert Janssen, who directs HIV prevention programs at the Atlanta-based agency.

"What it will do is allow us to target our prevention programs to those areas and populations among whom HIV is being currently transmitted," Janssen added.

The CDC plans to have the system in place in 35 areas that account for 93 percent of annual HIV infections by 2004. The agency has allocated $13 million in supplemental funding to state health departments for the program in fiscal 2004.

EXACTLY!
We don't see smokers demonstrating for a cure for lung cancer. The AIDS folks have made a decision to roll the dice and take their chances, then they demand that the government do something because they lost the gamble.
I feel for the children that are victims of their parents and are born with the disease, but I don't put any guilt on the government for not solving the problem.
Once a person is diagnosed with the disease they should be "marked" somehow in an area that will be visable to perspective victims. That might seem harsh but it may cut down on the risks for other players.

Ah yes, the putrid life style of death and despair, brought to you by the "we were young and gay" crowd from the local toilet in your city park.

We have known the risks - I have seen countless TV shows about the diseases. There have been movies about it, etc. This is a pretty preventable disease. The only ones who don't have a choice in preventing it are the babies!

So let's protect their behavior with the Constitution, let's give them their own junior/senior high schools to create more of their sickos, Let's show them kissing and hugging on TV, let's allow them to infest our seminarians, let's allow them to continue to pollute our blood supply, let's allow them to trash the Boy Scouts, and let's allow them to tell US that we're nuts and that they're well-adjusted. Incredible!

Sadly, when you read of "park toilet/bookstore" arrests they usually include a statisic of how many of those "men" are married men with wife and probably kids at home. Seems to be about a 50-50 ratio.

I agree with a poster above, the bisexual crowd is likely the most lethal at spreading the disease to the heterosexual population.

Wow! A study concludes that gay and bisexual men are catching HIV in greater numbers. What Einsteins.

In other news, scientists discover the surface of the sun is hot. Film at 11.

RE: Romans 1:24-27
Too many people believe that the Christian attitude is to accept the sin and the sinner.
Christ embraced the sinner and inspired them to repent and turn from their sinful ways. Many on the left call us unforgiving and unchristian for not embracing the sinner and overlooking the sin despite the damage to the Christian community.
Taking responsibility for a sin and attempting change seems an "evil conservative" doctrine missing from many churchs.

The story of the high school athlete from LA Calif being given a basketball free ride in another state was outrageous.
He knowingly infected his new home town sex partners with HIV. The lovely Allison a lawyer in New York City was mourned by her mother a few years ago. She had a lover that also loved quickies with pigs in bathrooms. There should be a life sentence for these acts of murder.

Come to think of it, we should make a deal allowing homos to marry under the condition that they must sign a form, punishable with death, that they never have sexual contact with a woman again.

Tongue in cheek?

"I would agree with you but I have a gay sister and two young daughters. Those who cannot procreate, recruit."

If you suspect your sister or her 'friends' might actually try to 'recruit' your daughters, I'm sure you are making every effort NOT to leave your girls alone with them at any time.

By the time this disease runs its course, the world will be a better place. A little less color coordinated perhaps, but a better place.

One of the most ignorant statements I've ever seen at FR. Millions of deaths equals a better place. Stalin and Hitler had similar agendas.

Personally I'd prefer it be lawyers that were heading towards extinction.

If people (anyone - heterosexuals and homosexuals) are still getting it - it's because of stupidity and nothing else.

It's the same stupidity that causes people to drink to excess, drink and drive, smoke, eat unhealthily, and not exercise.

Before the Internet broke the cycle of Liberal news bias, millions of Americans were fed the propaganda that AIDS was Ryan White was the "face of AIDS and its future victims!"

It was a lie then, and it is a lie now. AIDS research, treatment, and funding has dwarfed that of all other diseases in this nation combined--yet most people don't know this. More funding, and "education" has not stemmed out of control homosexual promiscuity and debauchery. If anything, homosexual anonymous sex has increased to Pre-Bath House Ban levels many major cities.

Meanwhile, innocent children who suffer and die of diseases that were no fault of their behavior or any other means (Musculoskeletal Diseases, Autistic Disorders, Leukemia, Hemophilia, Lupus, etc) get a fraction of the funding that AIDS recieves! In addition, AIDS comes with its own twisted brand of "civil rights."

It is disgusting.

Exactly the same as the folks who get emphysema.

It's not so much the gays that pisses me off, it's the bisexuals.

Ditto. Pick a team and stick (it) to it. If not for the switch-hitters, there is only a tiny chance that AIDS would ever make it into the straight population.
