William Bennett considering lawsuits against casinos
The Las Vegas Review-Journal ^ | Tuesday, July 29, 2003 | ROD SMITH

Posted on 07/29/2003 9:32:08 AM PDT by Willie Green

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use.

Morals czar William Bennett is considering filing lawsuits against Las Vegas casino companies that may have leaked documents detailing his gambling habits.

Bennett, the architect and leading advocate of Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign, was outed in the May issue of The Washington Monthly magazine as a gambler who has wagered -- and lost -- millions over the past decade at Bellagio and Caesars Atlantic City.

During a 60-minute interview with Tim Russert on CNCB this weekend, the former education secretary complained his privacy rights had been "deliberately damaged" while also mocking Las Vegas' latest national marketing campaigns.

"By the way, there's a commercial on that people may have seen about Las Vegas, that 'What happens here stays here.' Well, not in my case. Some people there were trying to do me great harm," Bennett said.

The "What happens here" ad campaign is part of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's latest marketing campaign to boost tourism to the city.

He argued the magazine report stemmed from the release of "some documents" by the casinos themselves which was not legal and violated his privacy rights.

He alleges documents were selectively leaked to create a false impression that he had a gaming problem.

While Bennett did not dispute the legitimacy of the documents and said he had no problem with the reporters who have written stories on his gambling, he told Russert the release of the information was not legal and he is looking into the possibility of legal action against the casinos.

On Monday, Bennett declined to comment further on the possibility of legal action against the casino companies.

Spokesmen for Park Place Entertainment Corp. , owner of the Caesars Atlantic City, and MGM Mirage, which operates Bellagio, declined comment.

Industry insiders have said details in The Washington Monthly article suggest the data about Bennett's gambling habits might actually have come from documents produced by Central Credit, a subsidiary of First Data Corp. of Greenwood Village, Colo.

Central Credit, which has denied being a source of the documents, is the gaming industry equivalent of credit reporting agency TRW. It allows member casinos to run credit checks on debts, marker activity and repayment habits of casino customers.

Industry experts and civil liberties attorneys doubt Bennett has a cause of action.

Las Vegas professor and casino gambling expert Bill Thompson said Bennett's privacy rights "were violated. I think he has a beef, but I don't know if he has a legal argument."

Allen Lichtenstein, general counsel for the Nevada chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, said "It might be good policy, but in the absence of some policy or contract, it does not appear there is a cause of action," he said.

he takes personal responsibility..but information he regarded as private and personal was leaked to the media. Bennett is not a government official; his life is not in the public domauin. He will hopefully have his privacy rights defended.
Also, reports would probably show his losses but not his wins, skewing the conception of his long term trend.

In the casino he was not wearing a placard that read:

TEN MILLION DOLLARS GAMBLED CLUB

There is a reason why he is in a self-imposed exile.

When was the last time you saw him on the tellie?

Words have meaning... Silence speaks volumes.

remember, all he did was compile a book of fables and stories to illustrate to CHILDREN the virtues they should have in their lives.
He neither wrote the stories or pretended that he did.
Bennett is a devout Catholic. The Catholic Church does not look on gambling itself as a sin.
Only improper gambling is sin.

Muslims stone female sheep after they have sex with them and write "Prostitute" on the dead sheep's grave.

You've run out of argument...not that you had one in the first place.

There is a reason why he is in a self-imposed exile. When was the last time you saw him on the tellie? Words have meaning... Silence speaks volumes.

And I suppose you are going to impart your great wisdom and enlighten us on this topic, then? Gee, maybe he's embarrassed, maybe there's something else going on in his personal life you don't know about, or maybe his lawyer has advised him to remain quiet publicly since he's thinking about a lawsuit. As of now I will take Bill Bennett's word, or lack thereof, over your's.

I agree. It was a horrid affront to his privacy rights to have some agency or agencys release his gambling records. That is his enjoyment, his passtime, his privilege and it apparently harmed NO ONE.

My guess is that if this lawsuit is pursued, and I believe there is an INCREDIBLE reason for Bennett to pursue a lawsuit ( you can bet the casinos at issue are trembling ), YOU WILL FIND DEMOCRAT OPERATIVES responsible for releasing his accounts. People with access may even have been paid off or have friendships with dem operatives, who knows, but BET this is all there and BET those people are sweating bullets about now....

To me it is no different that a BANK publishing your balance or debt.

I hope he goes after it with both barrels. Full bore. No holds barred.

Don't worry hon. I checked her account.

Apparently, she practiced the "virtue" of self-restraint and did not "bingo" all night alone in the high roller's suite like there was no tommorrow.

Bennett isn't the real hypocrit in all this.

I have to wonder why everyone who is so concerned about his gambling "vice" never seemed to notice his weight.

You would think all big gamblers would be upset to know at anytime some vindictive employee or operative can make your private account public knowledge.

Look...it was HIS money and what he does with HIS MONEY ain't my damn business or the lil rats who squealed the info to the press.

NOW had he been gambling away a company's pension fund, or PTA dues, or money rasied for campaigns...we would have an issue.

Far as I am concerned...he is an ADULT, who was not living on the DOLE, had plenty of money to BURN and chose to burn it in a way that some of us would have second thoughts about.

Personally...he didn't cause ANYONE any harm, did NOT inflict any harm on anyone else's life and should be left alone.

As for the worm...it has Terry McAuliffe written ALL over it...

So WWJD is just a crock?

The point is that when we examine our lives, we ALL fall woefully, miserably short of anything Jesus would have done. In the eyes of Christ, I'm willing to bet you aren't better than Bennett - and I know for sure I'm not.

If his gambling tangibly hurt someone (his family, for example), he's got to work that out with them - but the suggestion that because he gambled his character is more flawed than anyone else's is pretty silly, as far as I'm concerned.

McDonalds is set next week to release the number of Happy Meals he has consumed in the past 10 years.

Bennett's rebuttal:

"I purged after most those meals."
