Republicans spent Tuesday waiting for confirmation from former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan that he intends to enter the recall election, while two congressional Democrats from California called for U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein to put her name up as a possible replacement for Gov. Gray Davis.

Notice how the liberal media wants us to vote for a Democrat in Republican garb? That's how biased they are.

I suspect two things:

1. People are running so they can say they ran. They actually have a decent shot at winning. Heck, I think I'd run if I lived there.

2. Dems are registering to run as republicans. That way there will be hundreds of choices and the sole democrat candidate will get elected. (If they candidates are listed by party.) The sole democrat will get all the dem votes while the pubbie vote is split.

I suggest that some republicans run as democrats to help split the democrat vote.

I need a quick education brief on CA Election Law. Now, correct the following bullet comments as needed:

* All that is needed for a candidate to be on the ballot is 5K sigs on the petition;

* The name on the ballot with the most raw votes at the end, wins the mansion;

* It would be possible, under this scenario, to dilute the returns to the point where one solid voting bloc (ie, Socialists), even with a 25% share of the vote, could win the day;

Your podium, FRiends...

I wonder if the Cali hispanics realize just what an opportunity they have?

I'm trying to get my father to run. He's a third generation American of Mexican descent.

He's more moderate but on some things he's a die hard conservative.

To Reply to your Points:

* All that is needed for a candidate to be on the ballot is 5K sigs on the petition;
{{Actually 65 signatures and $3500, OR 10K sigs and free}}

* The name on the ballot with the most raw votes at the end, wins the mansion;
{{Question 1 on ballot: Recall Yes/No; If 50% plus 1 vote yes then Question 2: Choose from list of candidates. Candidate with most votes wins}}

* It would be possible, under this scenario, to dilute the returns to the point where one solid voting bloc (ie, Socialists), even with a 25% share of the vote, could win the day;
{{ Yes, very true, this is the big threat }}

One more sign that California's political elite just don't get it.

What this headline says to me is POPULIST REVOLT. People of all stripes are fed up with California's political community, be they Democrat or Republican. Those who offer that the bulk of the filings are egotist or nuts are off base. People are simply fed up and want their voice heard.

I fear the political community isn't listening. I fear that civil unrest on the part of the "silent majority" of citizen taxpayers is just one political stunt away.

Take your choice: 1) federal judge invalidates recall; 2) California Supreme Court invalidates recall; 3) California Secretary of State changes filing rules or any other creative, political shenanigan designed to frustrate the recall will set it off.

) federal judge invalidates recall

By George, I think he's got it!

Ninth Circus Court is out there. Mugawd, they just might do it! Can you see it, the Socialists are allowing this recall to go ahead, full knowing that they've got the courts behind them this time!

Go Riordan go.

I think he can pull it out if Feinstein stays out of the race.

What we need is a web site so we can dry run the election the week before to identify the strongest (Republican) candidate and then have everyone cast their vote for that candidate.

Duh!

Of course he can "pull it off". He's the backup choice of most Democrats should Davis be recalled.

It's win-win for the Democrats. Davis remains and they win. Davis is removed, Riordan replaces him and they win again.

If a Republican wins, they can hope a friendly judge will simply toss the results out of the window.

Exactly. Getting a liberal RINO in the Governor's office would be a feather in their cap.

At least Riordan won't bitch about how George W. Bush and Enron are to blame for California's problems.

Gimme a break! Riordan is fiscally conservative, tough on crime, and in general a good man to have in office. I'm not crazy about all his positions, but he won't be able to affect things like Abortion in the Governors mansion.

Riordan is like Gulianni without 9/11. He did an excellent job as mayor and would make a fine governor. Consider this: Davis or Riordan. Thats the only real choice you get. Your out of your gord if you think Tom McClintock or Bill Simon can win.

Riordan is a fiscal moderate and a social liberal. He is a RINO who would, if chosen to replace Davis, probably seek a full term as governor on the Democratic ticket, especially if Bush stumbles in his bid for a second term.

For many reasons, outlined on this forum, a great number of candidates have a chance to replace Davis (even Ozzie Osborn).

What's happening in California is closer to a populist revolt than any other political process. The California Republican Party has screwed the pooch once to often and has lost the confidence of conservatives. While registered Republicans are not naive (they'll vote for a perceived winner) they aren't going to follow Cox and company down any path after the budget debacle earlier in the week.

Other than the recently mentioned lack of bitching about how Bush and Enron caused California's energy problems I can't think of a single issue that Riordan would appraoch differently than Davis.
