It's got to be over for Davis if the AG is talking like this. I moved from SoCal three years ago and haven't stayed on top of the political maneuvering, but doesn't this qualify as rather startling? Or has this kind of break been in the works?

I'd say it's further evidence that what little support Davis had left is crumbling. Plus, Lockyer is getting in some relatively safe hits (Davis is despised within his party, and a lame duck to boot) on Davis to bolster his own standing in the party; Lockyer has the fantasy of being governor himself one day.

It is irritating to me that the Bush political team preferred Riordan to Simon in the last election. Riordan-Davis, twiddle dee twiddle dum. Find and get behind a strong Republican. Where is Pete Wilson?

Proof that Dickie Rear-end is more in tune with the Demo'Rat pukes than Davis is. A pox on them all.

Interesting...I concur. The AG is positioning himself as a candidate for governor.

I heard that "Red Star" Riordan was asking Democrats if they would support him running as a Democrat.
There's a good chance that he will run as an Independent if the Dems say no.
What really has to be done, is for Simon to step down and avoid splitting the vote with between Issa, Simon, and McClintock.

Yup, and now we have Congressman Elton Gallegly about to jump in. This keeps up, and we're gonna lose. :-(

A strange turn of events. Forget Dianne Feinstein running in the recall election. The RATS will rally around Riordan regardless of the party label he assumes. Not good news for conservatives. Riordan could be even worse than Grayout Davis.

This is the most important part, we DO NOT want Tricky Dick running as a Republican. If he wants to be Governor, let him do it as a 'Rat or as an Independent. If he is elected as a Republican, he will do to the CA GOP what Weld-Cellucci-Swift did to the MA GOP, utterly destroy it right down to the grassroots. And before all the nitwit liberal RINO apologists say "the CA GOP is nearly dead", I might remind them that they still have members of Congress (MA last elected a GOP Congressmember in 1994) and a decent number of state legislators (in MA, their % of the legislature is in the teens, and those are Pink Elephants, as in Socialists).

If Riordan runs as a Pubbie and wins, he would make it a #1 priority to purge all conservatives from the CA GOP. After Riordan retires from his political career, the CA GOP would have as much influence as the Greens and the Libertarians.

You know Davis is in trouble when he has Lockyer piling on and threatening him.
He must be measuring him for a cell with "Spike".

Gallegy running? Where did you hear this?
Riordan is a win win situation for the Rats. If he wins, he'll govern like a Rat. However, Riordan will still wear the "R" next to his name. If things go badly, they can blame the Republicans. If things go well, Riordan is in his 70's anyway, and will unlikely see another term in '06.

Bingo. This is PRECISELY the description of the MA GOP to a "T." Most of the Conservatives in MA were forced into 3rd parties or went over to the 'Rats, where they have a sizeable presence (and their House Speaker is a nominal one). The ideological battles in MA are fought mostly within the 'Rat party, and that's just an abomination. To think our national party could very well have ended up like that had Goldwater not kicked us in the other direction, despite how he himself ended up.
