Be sure and schedule your open heart surgery only on a sunny day... no clouds permitted... Heaven help you if a bird lands on the collector...

This strikes me as inappropriate technology. Laser scalpels are already available and are not weather dependent.

Incredible. I imagine there are many frustrated doctors in third-world countries who know they could save more lives if only they had more resources. A laser-like device that uses sunlight and costs a few thousand dollars instead of a $120,000 laser? Imagine what might be possible once they have built a few more of these devices and perhaps have tweaked the design. This might bring laser surgery to many places in the world where the price for a conventional laser makes it out of the question. Perhaps a doctor can tell me if such an inexpensive device might also be used regularly instead of a scalpel (less bleeding). It is my understanding that some conventional surgeries can require an enormous amount of blood.

I really would like to see just how they feed the powerful light into the fiber optic cable. Every fiber optic use I am familiar with involves very low levels of energy. I can't quite imagine how they would be able to channel the high power from concentrated sunlight.
