Why Frist and all won't go 24/7 (Vanity)
vanity | 8/4/03 | votelife

Posted on 08/04/2003 3:29:36 PM PDT by votelife

Freepers, First I apologize in advance for the vanity. I have been very active in the last several months trying to push Estrada's nomination. Pryor recently as he's from my state. On thread after thread I see people complaining at the fact that Frist/Bush won't make the Senate go 24/7. Let me explain this is probably not the best course of action to take right now.

1. The mainstream media- remember how Clinton was able to frame the govt shutdown as the Repubs fault? How easy do you think ABCBSCNNMSNBC will be able to say, right wing republicans block prescription drugs to put an arch-conservative on a court of appeals. I know this is unfair, but who said the NY Times is fair.

2. To go 24/7 from what I've read is MUCH harder on the Repubs than the Dems. Basically, only one Dem would have to be there (they could rotate) while all the Repubs or 50 I guess would have to be there. I'm not exactly sure on the particulars of this, perhaps other Freepers could back me up, but generally, this is tougher on the Repubs than the Dems.

3. It's August, nobody is paying attention. Going 24/7 now might get us judges, it might not. Tough to say how it would play out. Do it August of next year, or OCTOBER of next year, and Bush can tie it into his obstruction case very well.

4. While Bush has been getting beat (FOR NOW) in the Senate, he keeps the pressure on the Dems. After the Estrada filibuster was going, Bush nominated Pryor, an obvious deference to the conservative movement. Bush also nominated Pickering again, and Owen again. These are not the moves of someone who is rethinking the conservative judge strategy. Also, he just nominated Janice Brown, a black conservative who is a California Supreme Court Justice.

5. So basically based on number 4, I think Bush and Rove, are just letting the Dems destroy their party. The Dems will be on record filibustering a qualified Hispanic, a woman, a Catholic, a Baptist, a Black Woman, an Arab. Who knows who else, but this will be a VERY valuable campaign issue.

6. How do you think this obstruction plays in SC, NC, FL, GA, Pennslyvania (key primary between liberal Specter and conservative Toomey), ND, SD, etc? I can tell you that Tom Daschle won't like these obstruction ads running in his state! And how do you think the obstruction of Estrada will play among Hispanics right before the '04 election?

I know in advance some Freepers may accuse me of being a Bush-bot. I could care less. Bush has an excellent job on the pro-life cause. Ramming through some appeals court judges and somewhat removing the issue in '04 may actually HINDER Bush being able to get a conservative confirmed to the Court in the future. Pro life is starting to become more and more of a winning issue for the Repubs. As Bush likes to say, hearts are being changed. Freepers, be patient! I want these judges confirmed as much as the next Freeper, but I think we need to take a longer view of this problem. The Dems are getting more and more extreme, and out of touch with America. '04 is looking good (Hollings announced retirement today, also helping a future GOP Senate).

Now, if a Supreme Court justice retires, than this analysis goes out the window, and it would be time to go nuclear.

So for the Freepers who are upset at Frist, the best way to get these judges confirmed is to help defeat Democrat Senators (and defeat Arlen Specter)!

Comments appreciated, though I won't pay attention to them if they are not well reasoned.

When Bush gets his Judges, it will be a dagger to the heart of the Democrats, and a great victory for the Nation and the values that make it strong.

Very well stated. I think one of the biggest problems in our society is that 90% of people don't understand how the activist judges are legislating from the bench and upsurping powers that constitutionaly belong to the congress. The Dems know that many of their goals can only be achieved via judicial activism and that's one of the reasons they have "gone to the matresses" over Bush's nominees. This means of legislating poses a tremendous danger if not curtailed.

I think that's one of the reasons I get excited and impatient when this issue is brought up, I don't enjoy being governed by unaccountable philosopher kings.

thanks for your comments; I don't know what Bush's solution to this filibuster mess is, however his past comments suggest he won't take this lying down. I do know that our best course of action (which I've been doing) is to contact Bush/Frist/etc and share the anger with them. Tapping on our keyboards here doesn't do any good.

I'd sure rather be in Bush's position politically on this issue than Daschle's. We need to remember how UNPRECENTED this attack on a president's nominating power is. Even Ruth Bader Ginsburg was approved with many Republican votes! The Dems are trying to REWRITE the confirmation process and its our job (and Rush and Hannity and FR and other sites) to make sure that America hears the truth. Maybe part of Bush's plan is to use this issue to END Daschle's political career. It frustrates me to not know what the final plan is, but look, Bush just nominated Janice Brown, I think we can be confident there is a plan in store!

SD is a very conservative state and won't take kindly to this obstruction. Daschle only manages to get elected by promising pork and blurring the differences between the two parties. Pro-life and Pro-gun are two major issues in SD and the blocking of conservative nominees goes to that heart of that issue. I'd be happy to delay the confirmation of these appeals court nominees to see Daschle defeated or scared into retirement. I think this is a sentiment all Freepers can agree on!

Now freepers, call your senators and call Frist, write Bush, and call the talk shows!

thanks for your encouragement. I'm trying to keep the intensity up on FR for these nominees. I know it's frustrating because Estrada was nominated over 2 years ago, but the long term goal is a more conservative Supreme Court, not one conservative on the DC court. So all of our letters, calls, etc help Washington realize that this is a major issue. I've called the NRSC and told them that judges was the #1 reason why I voted Bush in 2000 and Repub in 2002. And that I want more defense of Bush's nominees. I've also made calls and told Senators that internet conservatives are getting frustrated with Frist/Bush bc Estrada and all aren't getting confirmed. I've also taken to writing "Free Miguel Estrada" on the backs of envelopes I'll send to George Bush or to Senators, as I saw you did.

Another Freeper, Hoosiermania I think, has stood out in front of Evan Bayh's office holding pro-Estrada signs.

If FR keeps up the heat on this issue, and at this point, I think it's more important to pressure Republicans, than I think we'll get our judges.

"The key, key, key thing is for Bush to win re-election. If the dems can't bring Harry Truman back from the dead they SHOULD be hopeless after their knocking of the President and the war."

As you have said, I hope more FR who care about the Supreme Court realize this, because if Bush wins, the SC will go to the right.

I don't think Bush will sign any anti gun laws nor do I think any antigun laws will reach his desk courtesy of Tom Delay. I'm not even sure if Daschle wants to sign an anti-gun law seeing as he's up for re-election in SD.

very cool idea; while not quite as nuclear in Human Events they talk about the House taking a more active role in judges and in highlighting judicial activism... Myself, I'd like to see ads next year saying, do we want 's judges making rulings outlawing the pledge of alegience? Mix in with children in classrooms, etc...Vote Bush who believes in the values that make America great!

why do you think Breaux supports Estrada, but not Pryor and Owen?

Do you think Breaux has decided not to run?

votelife......got to this thread via another...on which you asked JR to take a look at your vanity. Glad you posted the link as I would have missed your thread.

You have done a superior job, imo, in analyzing the strategery being employed. You have been tireless in keeping us informed of contacts/phone numbers and you deserve KUDOS for all your efforts.

*Don't those "LIVE" filibuster threads seem LONG ago?*

If you have a ping list for this topic....please add me to your list.

Thanks!

periodically I like to bump all of the Estrada threads, especially if I think of something new to add. Plus, I think a lot of people lurk on FR, including news, I read today that David Asman of Foxnews comes on hear. I think Hugh Hewitt ( news columnist) goes on hear 20 times a day!

So when Estrada gets "bumped" over and over again, lots of people see it again (and get motivated/angry) or see it for the first time. Hopefully some of those people are Dems who begin to question their party alegience.

In case you missed it......a BUMP to the *GOP PING LIST* for your comments on votelife's interesting analysis on WHY FRIST/BUSH won't, at this time, make the Senate engage in a 24/7 filibuster of blocked judicial nominees.

I don't see the main issue as the dems trying to rewrite the process, as much as I see them using the obstruction of the process as a lever to say - APPOINT WHO WE LIKE OR ESLE.

Knowing Bush - I'd say that's not a good plan to use with him. Bush understands the Constitution and his responsibility to appoint judges. The dems don't seem to know either the Constitution or that trying to bully Bush doesn't work - because they've been able to bully other repubs and gotten away with it; and it's why they keep underestimating Bush.

Although I trust the President on this issue - I find it frustrating and difficult to just sit and wait for the best timeing to do things; even though if I knew the plan I would agree with it.

Anyway, thanks for your comments.

Maybe if Estrada has the intestinal fortitude to last a while longer, they can go 24/7 when the election season heats up. (I know I hope for a lot)

I'm just as frustrated as you are. I used to be angry at the Dems. Now I just think they're either clueless or evil. Take your pick.

I wish I knew what the plan was, but it will be fun seeing it develop; I'll also enjoy watching the thrashing of the Dem primary.

just a hunch, but I think Estrada will stick it through; he's already come this far, I think he'll want to ride it through. Plus, he's a friend of Ann Coulter's (look in her acknowledgements)...She'll give him good advice.

Yeah he's lasted this long and it's getting to the point that if the Dems are going to be such a-holes about this, we might as well use this to get some votes from the Hispanic community next year if we can.
