WASHINGTON · For Americans with good-paying jobs or comfortable retirement incomes, the U.S. economy on President Bush's watch has been relatively benign despite a sluggish recovery from recession.

Their taxes are lower, and the things they buy are affordable because inflation remains tame. Borrowing is easy because interest rates are extraordinarily low, though starting to climb. And for people with money to invest, the stock markets are perking up.

For Americans with no jobs or low income, the Bush economy so far has been dismal. They have little to gain from the tax cuts that the president pushed through Congress, at least in the short run, and they don't have the wherewithal to take advantage of low-interest loans or the rise of stocks.

My biggest problem with "Conservatives" is the removal of "poor" people from the income tax roles.

People who aren't paying tax have no incentive to oppose government waste, have no incentive to support tax rate reductions, and have no incentive to boot corrupt politicians out of office.

People should pay taxes on ALL income. Lower rates, maybe, but taxes, YES.

When will one of these common taters realize that the Pres' tax cut is not supposed to spur demand but to spur investment in the economy?
Consumers have held up their end...that is why a "tax cut for the rich" is the only one which has a prayer of success.

Considering how poorly the "poor" have done in my lifetime, under all Presidents - according to liberals - eliminating poorism will never happen. It's like defining infinity - we can describe what it is not but we cannot describe what it is.
