This ping is of limited interest to some on the list but I am pinging due to the fact someone may be helped.

As always anyone wanting on or off my list just let me know.

Well, that's just swell. So glad to hear that you're hiring foreigners when millions of Americans are out of work.

So, why don't you work to get a law passed ... a law that hits me as well as HP ... and I'll be more than happy to comply(?)

With regard to the validity of the point this article seeks to make, all I can say is that the validity of a point seems to be inversely proportional to the number of words required to make it.

People who don't like to use their brains employ trite cliches instead.

I've been "unemployed" since last April and survived. I'll be reading this for tips on how to expand. Although I have been a programmer for most of my life, I always got called on to make things work. My heart is in the hardware.

If you make enough, you should look into forming an S-corp.

If your heart is in the hardware, perhaps you should expand into embedded engineering? That's what I do.

I recently left a large computer company to start my own thing:

Embedded Excellence, inc.

Don't worry, mods, that's just a place-holder web page that I use while I think of something to put there...

You know, I'd rather not see new laws to force you or HP to use American workers. I wish you and HP both would just have the decency and patriotism to hire American without the government forcing you. When you receive an email from a desperate, unemployed American programmer--which I am sure you do every day--and you ashcan it because the position is being filled by a foreigner, how can you look at yourself in the mirror?

With some much business going offshore, there is a big demand for in-office support staff. A VP is NOT going to call some beastie in Slurperia to fix his email. He wants someone at his beck and call. Eventually, the code will come back to the US because corporate America expects their code to BEND to their desires and some code monkey in a loincloth in New Guinea doesn't read minds like a US programmer.

I tried home-business technical consulting when I was laid off from GM, AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION.

It didn't work out well for me. The main obstacle was convincing people they needed a computer to begin with (this was in '92, before the Internet caught on).

Secondly, since my customers were also friends and neighbors, they expected me to work FOR NOTHING.

All in all, I made less money than I do now between contracts assignments than I make from the revenue on my website.

The tech industry can't be that bad. I had two interviews last week, I have another one scheduled for Friday, and I still get calls from recruiters for contract work.

.....good luck with CAD at home. A company that my GF works with just sent all their CAD offshore. Guess where?

India.

Actually, I'm quite proud of the US programmers that I *do* employ (and at wages higher than the offshore programmers). However, if I didn't have a mix I'd simply be out of business. Sorry, I've got mouths to feed here. If protecting US jobs comes up for a vote, however, you'll have my vote.
