A man clad only in boxer shorts allegedly carjacked a couple driving through Newport in a red convertible last night, and then became the subject of an air and land search. He was finally captured early this morning -- still in his skivvies -- in a Newport alley, police say. Newport Police Chief Tom Fromme said Cincinnati police began pursuing Marlin J. Patton, 27, of Cincinnati, some time before 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Fromme said Patton crashed into a car in the 400 block of Columbia in Newport about 9 p.m. and jumped from his wrecked car to commandeer a Chrysler Sebring convertible occupied by a Wilder, Ky., woman and her friend, who was visiting from Boston.
Patton took the car near the post office, Fromme said.
"The woman jumped out there and then he struck the male victim in the face and told him to get -- ," he said. "(The man) got out at Ninth and Monmouth. -- Then he abandoned the car on 13th Street and walked into the woods."
Fromme said police searched the woods with the help of a police dog and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department helicopter, but were unable to find the suspect. But, shortly after 4 a.m., officers spotted Patton in his noticeably scant attire in Gideon Alley and arrested him. "When they caught him -- , he was all cut up from thrashing about in the woods, I guess."
