A city school teacher who was arrested on drug charges has his job back at least for now.
An arbitrator has ordered the citys Department of Education to reinstate Michael Campbell to Intermediate School 72 on Staten Island.
The department suspended Campbell after police say he was arrested on charges of cocaine and marijuana possession.
Campbell is now taking part in a drug treatment program, and the arbitrator ruled that Campbell's participation in the program clears his record.
However, the Department of Education has released a statement saying, This is another example of an arbitrator blocking the departments efforts to remove people not fit to be in our schools."
The chancellor's office says the department will appeal the decision.

Yes, a treatment program will always make things better. Now, why didn't we think of that for Mary Kay LaTourneau and others of her ilk? Then all would be well with the government school world, and they could get back to the important work of teaching tolerance.

I must be dreaming... Never thought I'd agree with the Department of Education about anything!

Wake up - you were dreaming. It's the "city's" education dept....not the DOE.

Do they have a treatment program for that yet?

Bloomberg has made some progress on this front.

Gee, not that it matters but,I wonder what the ethnicity of this doper is ?
And IF he is white would they have still re-instated him?

Next teachers can not be fired for giving coke to kids. The names of those who wanted this teacher back in school should be publizied.

Actually, I vaguely remember a story about a public school teacher somewhere who happened to have a Bible inside her desk. She didn't read it when children were present -- she just had it in her desk. Someone found out about it and the teacher got into trouble. If she had drugs in her desk instead, I imagine the ACLU would have rushed to defend her. I don't know if she was fired.

Interesting! My bet is that the drugee teacher here is of the non-minority persuasion, white. The arbitrator is using the alcohol abuse program as a model, you correct the core problem rather than terminate the employee. But, alcohol is a "legal" product. It's use and possession are not illegal.
The thug teachers' unions will, of course, use this case to argue that the termination of every black teacher (sure, as if that could ever happen in NYC!) for drug possession is racially discriminatory. That, in turn, will allow Sharpton to rouse folks out into the street to protest, then riot, and, then, burn stuff and loot liquor stores, dry cleaners, and furniture stores.
