Blackout or 'greenout'?

Oil is the lifeblood of our industrial society.

But it's been under attack since the early 1970s.

Environmentalists told us we'd all choke from the exhaust fumes back then.

Then they lied about global warming.

Then they lied about the ozone hole.

Then they complained about oil drilling in Alaska.

Then they complained about drilling for natural gas.

Then they complained about oil drilling offshore.

Then they complained about reliance on foreign oil and told us we must conserve. (They're right about the dangers of foreign oil. We don't need it. We ought to be energy independent.)

Then they complained about nuclear power and shut down all construction of new plants.

They want us to build windmills and solar plants – totally inefficient, unsightly and way too costly.

In other words, they don't want America to grow. They don't want it to prosper. They don't want us to live any better than people live in the Third World.

But just watch how these people scream when their air conditioning goes off. Just watch what happens when they turn on the light switch and nothing happens. Just watch how they try to point fingers of blame at others.

We've seen it in California. That's why Gray-out Davis is on his way out of office.

We all believe in conservation. We all believe in good stewardship of the earth's resources. But we don't need to listen any more to people who use these good ideas and common-sense notions to cripple our economy and the American way of life.

Nobody is certain what caused last week's blackout of 50 million Americans. It may have been terrorist sabotage. Al-Qaida has claimed responsibility for it. But there's another group of subversives who have been attacking America's productivity for much longer than Osama bin Laden. They, too, are religious fanatics – followers of a neo-paganistic strain of earth worship.

It's tempting to call them terrorists. It's true only of some. But most of the eco-extremists do their damage not with bombs, but with equally destructive public policies.

They, too, hate America – if for different reasons than al-Qaida.

It is because of these green extremists and the politicians too easily intimidated by their lobbying efforts that no major oil refineries have been built in the U.S. since 1976, although the number of vehicles in use has doubled and plants are running at capacity.

Regulatory changes enacted during the last administration have, as even the Environmental Protection Agency put it, "impeded or resulted in the cancellation of projects that would maintain or improve reliability, efficiency or safety of existing power plants and refiners." Keep in mind the EPA is part of the problem – part of the destructive campaign of public policies.

Regardless of the cause of last week's blackout, it should serve as a major warning to Americans. It should show us all what the future might be like if we don't wise up.

It's time to get serious about energy in this country. We need it. We need it to preserve our freedom, our way of life. It has to come from somewhere.

The green machine has forced us to get too much from foreign sources. That puts America at risk of international political blackmail. Young men and women may be forced to die in foreign wars some day to keep that oil flowing. It doesn't have to be that way.

America should strive for energy independence. We can't do that through conservation alone. We can't do that by harnessing solar power. We can't do that with windmills. We need potent energy sources that need to be discovered through exploration, piped out of the earth and refined here at home.

It's a matter of national security.

In other words, they don't want America to grow.

There is very little disagreement amongst economists about policies that lead to growth. That they are not instantly adopted can only be explained by the fact that a majority of our representatives belong to the "THEY" camp described above.

Excellent post! I don't always agree with Farah, but I do here.

Name the EPA, with its taxpayer funded green agenda, viciously forcing its precepts down the throats of landowners and businesses, with regulatory powers that have the force of law, fining businesses, running solid citizens off their lands, pushing the environazi (in the clearest and most literal sense of the word) down American throats!

They should be dismantled, defunded, run out of the country! They belong in socialist Europe! They and their filthy policies will ruin us!

An interesting parallel happened here in the Greensboro, NC area with their water woes. About 30 years ago, planners realized that the two lakes Greensboro used for water would not provide adequate supplies in the future. Someone came up with the idea for a reservoir along the Randleman/Guilford County line that would adequately provide water for many years to come. The Army Corps of Engineers drew up the plans and the Randleman Dam Project seemed to be under way.

Then the greenies came in. They effectively bottled up construction for 25 years. Every time it seemed that the project was close to breaking ground, they filed another lawsuit, found another "snail darter" or some other means of halting the work.

Well, about 3 years ago, the South was hit by drought. Greensboro was hit hard & had water rationing implememted. Water levels on Lake Brandt & Lake Higgins dropped many feet and people couldn't even take showers for more than a few minutes. Fines were handed out to people caught watering their lawns or washing their cars. The winter didn't provide enough water to fill the lakes back up to their previous levels & the following summer an even worse drought hit the area.

Guess what's getting built right this minute? That's right! The Randleman Dam! It will be up and running very soon & the greenies have barely been heard from for almost 3 years on this issue!

I only hope the rest of this country follows suit and allows the construction of oil, gas & electrical facilities we so desperately need.

Good job, but the environazis (literally, that's what the EPA is) is responsible for so many losses and so much misery they should all be sent to China, to give China lessons.

I'm thinking of the forests that burned because no judicious logging was allowed and the logging roads closed (denying firefighters access), I'm thinking of farmers sued, fined, run off their places, I'm thinking of industries that didn't expand, I'm thinking of housing and commercial buildings that weren't built, I'm thinking of electricity that wasn't generated, oil that wasn't drilled--the ENTIRE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS IMPACTED BY THIS VICIOUS, SOCIALIST AGENCY!

/rant off, again. ;-D

This attitude is everywhere. It's been summed up by two acronyms, NIMBY (Not in my backyard) and BANANA (Build absolutely nothing anywhere near anybody) and it is pervasive.

We have the means to be totally energy independent. If we were we would need nothing from the rest of the world except those semi-luxury goods that we choose to buy. An economically independent US would be free of the political pressure our socialist trading partners now exert (The Kyoto Accords for example) and our indiginous socialists would lose valuable support.

It's been said by me and many others elsewhere but it's all, always about control. The left seeks to control all of our choices and making us artificially dependent upon foreign powers is a way to keep us weak.
