Financier Warren Hellman throws support behind Schwarzenegger
San Francisco Business Times ^ | Aug. 21, 2003 | Mark Calvey

Prominent San Francisco financier Warren Hellman told a surprised group of financial executives Thursday that he's supporting Arnold Schwarzenegger for governor in the Oct. 7 recall election.

"Arnold Schwarzenegger is the kind of Republican that I think I am," Hellman told 130 people attending the Association for Corporate Growth luncheon in San Francisco.

Hellman and San Francisco's legendary venture capitalist Arthur Rock were among a select group of California business leaders who met with Arnold Schwarzenegger Wednesday in Los Angeles. The meeting also included Schwarzenegger's economic advisors Warren Buffett and George Schultz.

When asked what Hellman will tell Gov. Gray Davis when he met with him later Thursday, Hellman responded: "Sorry."

"Gray, I'm still against the recall. But the recall is a fact of life.

"Gray will probably tell me, 'You're being disloyal. I was going to put you on the budget-reform committee,'" Hellman said to a round of laughter.

Prior to speaking at the luncheon, Hellman told the San Francisco Business Times there are several reasons for his decision to support the actor-turned-candidate.

"The guy has a sense of humor. That's No. 6 on my list of Top 10 reasons," said Hellman, who has long valued someone's ability to see the lighter side of life in his professional dealings.

"He was obviously very intelligent and very open-minded in the non-press meeting," said Hellman, describing himself as a moderate Republican.

Asked by a reporter about Schwarzenegger not discussing specific policies, Hellman said, "He shouldn't be."

"You have to own the company before you make changes," said Hellman, who has bought and fixed his share of companies over the years.

Gray Davis is toast. Even savvy businessmen know a losing investment when they see one.

These scumbags just want to ensure their place on the gravy train.

I'd love to see McClintock win, just so he can tell them to f' off.

Mr. Hellman twice completed the Western States Endurance Run, a 100-mile foot race from Squaw Valley to Auburn, and three times completed the Tevis Cup, a 100-mile horse race over the same course. He is also a five-time age group national champion in Ride and Tie (combination of cross-country running and endurance horseback riding).

“We are honored to have F. Warren Hellman as this year’s recipient of the Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Award," said Bruce Wigo, Executive Director of USA Water Polo.

Past recipients of the award include: Entrepreneur Peter Ueberroth, San Jose State; Astronaut Steve Smith, Stanford University and Businessman Don Fisher, UC Berkeley.

Do you have ANY principles or core beliefs?

If so, what are they?

That's two of us. Wanting to win just to get revenge isn't doing the State a favor.

"I'd love to see McClintock win, just so he can tell them to f' off. "

Shooting Cruz missives, eh?

Arnold never won an award for his acting. And so far he hasn't shown me anything to reward him with one of the biggest prizes in politics, especially his first time out. Now Tom McClintock, who has been fighting in the trenches for Californians for 20 years, has earned the right to be Governor. All the while Arnold was off making huge sums of money, while Tom toiled in the trenches on a meager public servant salary. Sorry Arnie, but you are no Tom McClintock, and have a long way to go before you can even polish Tom's shoes. And tell Buffet to go back to the land of Oz. We Californians have been burned long enough by political illusions.

Um... wrong. Arnold won a Golden Globe in 1977 for Best Acting Debut in a Motion Picture-Male for the film Stay Hungry.

Damn facts...

I'm for Arnold, and here's why. As Abraham Lincoln said: "I'd rather the victory of some of my policies than the defeat of all of them."

Lots of people in politics have "earned" the right to a higher office. But that's not how it works - if it was, Ron Paul would be President. In a hypothetical two man race between McClintock and Bustamante, McClintock would get about the same vote that Simon did last year. In that same race between Schwarzenegger and Bustamate, Arnold would reach across the party lines and take away about 10% of those Bustamante voters, McClintock can't do that, and he'll never be able to do that. Don't get me wrong, I really like the guy and I'd like to see him run for a House or Senate seat, but he isn't going to win this race.
