The explosions that got this recall campaign off and running lit up the political sky but left a lot of damage, much of it self-inflicted. Arnold Schwarzenegger's stunning announcement flattened Gov. Gray Davis and shattered Democratic unity around the party's recall strategy, sending Davis' lieutenant governor, Cruz Bustamante, scurrying into the race, breaking his own pledge not to run.

Last year, while campaigning for his Prop. 49 after-school programs initiative, Schwarzenegger won a standing ovation from the Commonwealth Club, assembled at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, when he declared in answer to a question from the audience: "I would never stand in the way of any child going to school, whether he or she is here legally or illegally, it does not matter."

There are no schools in their countries of origin?

Interesting, indeed.

Where's he been, anyway? "A lot of time I've been at the house," he tells me in a brief conversation, "meeting with leading economists, educators, water and power experts, you name it." Once up to speed, Schwarzenegger says he will hold more policy forums ...

If this is true, why won't Arnold divulge some details and specifics of his economic recovery plan, to get California out of the financial mess its in?

We all know Arnold is a self-professed social liberal. Conservative Republicans want to see some evidence, Arnold's a fiscal conservative. It's still not too late.

I hope that Prop 187 becomes THE issue in this campaign even if the 25 - 30 percent of Americans of Hispanic origin had not voted for it in 1994.

I believe that 25 to 30 figure is the draw Republicans get from Americans of Hispanic origin anyway. If they are stupid enough to run from Prop 187 they will for sure lose the likes of the 40 percent of Americans who came out in 1994 solely to vote FOR the Save Our State initiative, Prop 187.

The California Repub idiots will probably head for Mexico City to kiss co-President Fox's butt on live TV instead of supporting American voters. I say again, I really, really believe Democrat moles have a large say in what the California Republican party does.

If Schwarzenegger turns on Prop 187 I will not vote for him. Mechista Cruz "I call 'em the way I see 'em" Bustamante (D, Mexico) can be governor of the Republica del Norte. BTW, Cruz.. Arnold's name is pronounced Schwarzen - egger, sir.
