[history]
August 24, 2003 -- IT was a "high- five" moment for Rachel Elizabeth Huskey as she stood in front of her class at Sturgeon High School in Sturgeon, Mo., that fateful day.
Having aced a tough question from her history teacher, the apple-cheeked 16-year-old was met with cheers of approval from her fellow students.

"Doctors who examined Huskey's body found low calcium and potassium levels in her blood, most likely from her being on such a diet, wrote Robinson and another attending physician in a Southern Medical Journal report last year. "
Most likely-have they done an autopsy and complete investigation?
I believe Dr. Atkins recommends a supplement for everyone on the diet.

Atkins was a genius - Look, for the past 30 years Americans have increased their intake of Carbohydrates and severely dropped the level of fat intake, and guess what We're fatter and have more health problems than ever.
If anyone should be sued it's the proponents of the High Carb, Low Fat diets that the "Experts" have been pushing for 30+ years.
Carbohydrates are poison and don't ever forget it!

Then, don't ever leave your house. There is a miniscule chance that a wide range of things can happen to you. If 1 in a million is the new threshold for responsibility, we're in trouble.
Let's cut to the chase: how much?

:sigh: What is with the rash of anti-Atkins stories? Now that he is dead, he can't refute them himself so now they're emboldened or something?

A sorry hatchet job on Atkins. Sorry, people, you can't argue with success.

Those depletions, in turn, disrupted her normal cardiac functions, causing her heart to stop, they said, noting that the 5-foot-9-inch, 225-pound teen had no known medical conditions and was in good health. Hauling around 225 pounds had nothing to do with this kid's death.
Nothing at all.
I've been on Atkins for six years (as of yesterday). EVERY BOOK written by Atkins insists on a multi-vitamin, including Potassium.
I did a treadmill test two weeks ago. Best results I've EVER HAD, and I'm 52!

These people are not following all the things that Dr. Atkins said to do. In essence, they are NOT doing Atkins. It's unfair to blame Dr. A for their problems...
Now I'm hungry. I'm gonna go eat my turkey with butter and cheese, and have a boiled egg.

Quiet!
There's too much independent thinking going on here!
Do you think that the entire medical proffesion has been lying to you for the past 30 years?
Now shut up and eat tons of pasta and afterwards remember to take your Prozac and drug your kids on Ritalin - I mean that's what the Medical Establishment wants Right? Who are we to question their infinite wisdom!?

I live only on sugar, starches, and carbs. I'm a vegetarian, and so meat is out. I drink Coca-Cola Classic all day long. For some reason, I manage to remain thin. However, I have low blood sugar and have probably become dependent upon -- or addicted to -- the constant sugar 'highs.' I'd like to try Atkins but as a vegetarian I would be left with very little to eat, and I can't comprehend making it through even one day without loads of sugar. Suggestions, anyone?

Say Pubbie I was watching tv and actually saw a Zoloft commercial asking people if they have 'social anxiety disorder'. I started laughing. Pop a pill and stop being a shrinking violet.

A sad case of coincidence.
Atkins stresses having all your blood work done before you start the diet.
This is of course to have something to compare to on a follow up visit.
That way your doctor cannot blame the diet for your bad health, the result of the way you have lived up to the point of starting the diet.
To: cyborg
There's a commerical I hear on the radio for some psychotropic drug. A woman asks if you have social anxiety, and a string of other emotions (that we all have by virtue of just being human). The sneaky part is that the commerical -- its tone, how she reads and stresses, etc. -- is intentionally designed to be anxiety-provoking as you listen to it.

Start eating lots of cheese and eggs and seafood - Trust me, the carbohydrates you are eating are going to kill you sooner or later, and probably later.
Try cutting the amount of sugar you eat down gradually ie cut the amount of sugar you take in by half for one week then half the next week.
Or order one of Atkins books, trust me, carbohydrates WILL kill you if you eat to much of it for too long!

The likely cause, says Dr. Paul Robinson, was heart damage brought on by adherence to the Atkins diet - a high-protein, low-carbohydrate regimen embraced by more than 30 million adult Americans and an untold number of teens. "Huskey's sudden death fits the physiology of what happens on the Atkins diet," Robinson, an assistant professor of child health at the University of Missouri, Columbia, told The Post. Doctors who examined Huskey's body found low calcium and potassium levels in her blood, Well duh, bet she wasn't taking her potassium. I feel sorry for the girl, but you gotta read the WHOLE book, not just the what can I not eat part! ARGH!!!
