Bible given fashion makeover to lure teen girls

Alexandra Alter, Religion News Service

Published August 30, 2003 REVO30

Where are teenage girls turning for advice about fashion, dating and getting along with their parents? Would you believe, the New Testament?

After years of trying to sell Bibles to one of the nation's savviest and most cynical consumer groups, Bible publishers at Thomas Nelson have developed a new way to snare adolescents' interest: turning the sacred book into a magazine.

"Revolve," the new Bible for girls between the ages of 12 and 17, offers the complete New Testament in a fashion-magazine format, replete with images of stylish, smiling young women, quizzes and celebrity birthdays (sorry, no horoscopes).

Gushing effusively over "Revolve," Brooke Nichols, 15, of Nashville, could think of only one flaw: the omission of the Old Testament.

"When I have to use the Old Testament in Bible study I have to pull out my other Bible," she said.

Nonetheless, Brooke said "Revolve" has been a big hit with her friends at school.

"My friends, they don't like to read the Bible, but once they saw it they were like, 'I'm going to have to get me one of those,' " she said.

I'm not flaming. If it gets their nose in the book one can hope it will do some good. Here is a snippet from another link to article:

Parents who ask their teenagers what part of the Bible engaged them most might be surprised to hear them cite the sections where "guys say what they like about girls." Would that be Peter's letter advising women not to braid their hair, decorate themselves with gold or wear expensive robes? No, it's "Guys Speak Out," a serial sidebar in Revolve featuring teenage boys' thoughts (alongside their handsome mugs) on how girls should dress and behave.

I'm ordering some to try out on my Bible Club girls at school. They look pretty interesting and could really catch the attention of someone who might otherwise not even look at God's Word. Wise as serpents, harmless as doves.

OK. They should be in from Amazon by next meeting. Now, let's have one for boys with hot rods and 4x4s and fine fishing!

I agree with you. I read on some old posts that there are Freepers out there who think that the Purpose Driven Life series is just a money grabbing, church growing vehicle, and not legitimate because of that. I think it's a wonderful way to attract people to Christ, and wonder what could be wrong with that? Our church will be doing the Purpose Driven series next month, and it's not a findraising event at all, though, duh, if you gain members, you will increase your offerings, right? One thing leads to another, but if it leads to God, like these New Testaments aim to do, isn't that the point?

My God!! Why on eath would you do such a thing??

If these women/girls do not want to know the God of the Bible because a Bible looks like a Bible, what makes you think they will pay attention to a COSMO magazine and actually understand they are sinners in need of a Saviour???

Wise as serpents?? How about bringing strange fire before the Lord instead??

"My God!! Why on eath would you do such a thing?? "

$$$$$

"If these women/girls do not want to know the God of the Bible because a Bible looks like a Bible, what makes you think they will pay attention to a COSMO magazine and actually understand they are sinners in need of a Saviour??? "

Makes em feel better. Also gives them NO reason to change anything.

"Wise as serpents?? How about bringing strange fire before the Lord instead??"

Serpents? Yes. Wise? LOL!

Thanks! My kids have all gotten "baby bibles": a lot of illustration and some text. What's the difference? I don't understand the arguement that some make.

How is this any different than PAYING us (when I was a kid) for memorizing a Bible verse? I think it's better. Either the kids or their folks are spending a few bucks for this magazine.

Aanyway to bring kids to Christ is okay with me.
