Israel targets Shaikh Yassin
Al Jzseera ^ | Saturday 6th September 2003

Posted on 09/06/2003 11:01:29 AM PDT by Ace Correspondent

The spiritual leader of the Islamist resistance group Hamas has been injured after Israeli missiles slammed into a Palestinian apartment block in a densely populated area of Gaza City.

Shaikh Ahmad Yassin was slightly injured following the attack on Saturday, Hamas spokesman Abd al-Aziz al-Rantissi told Aljazeera.

The wheelchair-bound Yassin, a co-founder of Hamas and its spiritual leader, has been treated at Shifa Hospital.

The paraplegic, wheelchair-bound, 67-year-old was visiting an acquaintance in Gaza with Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyyeh when the residential building they were in was hit by an Israeli warplane, Haniyyeh told Aljazeera.

Seventeen people, mostly women and children, were wounded in the raid.

Israeli admission

The Israeli army later confirmed it had attempted to liquidate Shaikh Yassin and warned that the Zionist state would pursue its "relentless war" against the Islamic movement.

"Israeli security forces acted this afternoon in Gaza in an Israeli airforce strike against a building in which the terrorist
leadership of Hamas headed by Sheikh Yassin was meeting to plan future terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens," the army
statement read.

"The IDF (Israeli army) will continue to wage a relentless war against Hamas and other terrorist organisations," it added.

Hamas reaction

Furious, Hamas threatened to assassinate Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon after the attack.

"We warn Sharon that his head is now wanted by our troops," leaders of Hamas' military wing said via loudspeaker at the Shifa hospital.

The attack is the latest in a series of Israeli assassination attempts on leaders of Hamas. Yassin is the most senior figure within the group to be targeted

Emergency teams rushed to the scene of the blast but it was not immediately clear whether anyone has been killed or how many others have been injured.

Missile strikes

Huge clouds of smoke have been billowing from the rubble of the building in a residential area of the Gaza Strip's main city.

It is the first time Israel had attempted to kill Hamas'
spiritual leader and founder. It has, however, assassinated scores of the radical group's leaders.

Since 21 August Israel has killed 11 Hamas members and four civilian bystanders in helicopter missile strikes in Gaza.

The attacks have ended a ceasefire called by Hamas and other resistance groups on 29 June, which Israel said it was not bound to observe

Where's the Barf Alert for the obvious Al-Jazeera bias? Are we forgetting that this source is not only anti-Israel, but anti-American as well?

Why should Israel not go after the leader of a group (Hamas) dedicated to Israel's destruction, which carries out suicide bombings targeted at innocent civilians? My only regret is that they didn't get Ahmed Yassin, along with Rantisi and all the rest of the Hamas leadership.

The scum bags would say this, even if no one had been within 10 miles of the place.

Exactly. I have no feelings for the scum who support terrorists by allowing them to exist. Kill all terrorists and their supporters. I wish IDF would blow the hell out of the terrorists parades, I see them as a target rich environment and as we all know arabs love to be blown to bits.
The PLO nixed the road map, now exterminate them all. Only the media will cry. I'll be passing out baked goods and parting in the streets like those arab pigs did on 911.
Die you Bastards!

Make no mistake about it. The IDF could have eliminated Yassin if they had wanted to.

Yes. IDF Spokesperson to Israeli newspaper said that the reason they were not able to kill Yassin is because IAF used a weaker bomb because Israel wanted to minimze civilian casulties and also use this strike as a warning to Hamas.
