[history]
A dog that mauled its owner to death this weekend was supposed to have been euthanized months before the victim adopted him, police said.
Luger, a 3-year-old Doberman pinscher, was taken to the Associated Humane Societies shelter in Newark by his previous owners to be killed, Medford Police Chief Edwin Wood said.

the shelter's attorney, Harry Levin is going to be a very busy man.

I owned a doberman once. We adopted it from a shelter where it was rescued from an abusive situation. The dog was a friendly and loving dog but was extremely aggressive to strangers. I'll never own a doberman again for that reason alone. Same with Pit Bulls, Rot's and German Shepherds.

Just speculation, but...
I bet it is going to turn out that some idiot in the shelter felt sorry for "the poor puppy" and decided to not euthanize the animal. It wasn't just a mere oversight.

No kidding.
The dog had bitten someone, and the attack was serious enough for his owners to pay for the dog to be destroyed, he said.
I see at least two lawsuits.
I love dobies, I have owned 3 and they are sweet dogs if they have been bred and trained properly. But sometimes there is just a bad one.

Note the name of the dog. Funny you don't hear a lot of Fluffy's mauling their owners.

Why didn't they just take the dog to the vet, and have him euthanize it?Good question.
To: Frapster
I've seen both Dobies and Rots play with toddlers like the cuddliest dogs around, only to turn vicious if a stanger walks by the front yard. Very protective, and very territorial, but completely kind and gentle to the owners.
I don't know if pit bulls have similar characteristics. Given the purpose of a pit bull, I doubt it.

"Why didn't they just take the dog to the vet, and have him euthanize it?" Because it costs over $100 to have a vet conduct it, that's why.
To: Pan_Yans Wife
Better question is why did the shelter do what they had been paid to do instead of allowing a dog with a KNOWN history of biting to be adopted?

Too much of a bleeding heart?
This is what bothers me about rescue organizations that spend so much time and energy rehabilitating aggressive dogs. Then they need funding and many very nice dogs with no 'criminal' record get passed over.

It might have been to minimize cost, and exposure of other people and pets in a regular vets office to a vicious animal. The animal might also have been take there temporarily after the attack, and they paid to have him euthanized on-site.

Is it illegal to kill your own dog, in that state?
If not, why didn't the homeowner do it?
I don't understand people's aversion to accepting responsibility. You either keep the dog in your home for the duration of its natural life, or you either find it a new home, or you have it killed.
Taking it to the shelter is passing the buck, in my opinion.

I dunno that it's the breed so much as the overbreeding... and why they're overbred (because they're used so often by those who continue the cycle by MAKING them overly aggressive for fighting purposes.)
BUY a dog from a reputable breeder, everyone! Don't buy from pet stores or backyard breeders.
Off my soapbox now...
