Wife of Jarrett's crew chief killed in wreck
The Associated Press
September 11, 2003
3:41 PM EDT (1941 GMT)

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- The wife of Dale Jarrett's crew chief was one of three people killed when her limousine burst into flames after being hit from behind by a pickup truck.

Tara Howell Parker, 29, died late Wednesday in the interstate accident, police said. Parker was the wife of Shawn Parker, crew chief for Jarrett's No. 88 Robert Yates Racing team.

"I can't put into words the grief we feel," Yates said. "We are all in shock right now. All we can do is support Shawn and what he needs to do as well as Tara's family."

Megan Elizabeth Howell, 16, and Mysti Howell Poplin, 24, both of Mocksville, also died, police said. All three were passengers in the limousine.

Police said the limousine stopped in a travel lane because of construction on Interstate 40. It was struck by a pickup truck driven by Jeffrey Niles McFayden of Greensboro. The truck pushed the limousine into the car in front of it and a gasoline tank ruptured, causing the limo to burst into flames, police said.

The limousine driver and the driver and a passenger in the front car were not injured.

McFayden was charged with driving while impaired and three counts of second-degree murder. He was in Guilford County Jail under $300,000 bond.

Parker of Cornelius received a heart transplant two years ago, and she and her husband adopted a baby boy in July, the Yates team said.

"Tara has gone through a lot in the last two years and was really an inspiration to everyone that knew her," Yates said.

Plans are being made to replace Parker as crew chief for Sunday's New Hampshire 300 in Loudon, N.H., Jarrett spokeswoman Penny Copen said.

Our sympathies go out to the Shawn and all the families affected by this tragedy. May God comfort them in their time of such losses that no one should have to endure.

Ping for Loudon ..

Shadowed albeit by the loss of one of NASCAR's own extended family.

:-(

Send your condolences to the Parker family

So sorry to hear the loss of DJ's crew chief's wife. Horrible way to die. I am a die-hard 88 fan and Dale's year can't possibly finish up soon enough here. Very surprised at where Terry came in there. Seems like he finally has kicked the bug that he has had for the last 4 yrs.

I had just done a search (nascar) and the next moment you pinged me.

Trapped in a burning cars is a horrible way to die and when it's some punk under the influance that causes it it is compounded. Three dead...life in prison for the perp is not enough.

It just seems so senseless to me that after all Tara has been through and all the prayers for her to receive a new heart that some idiot drunk driver could take her life away. It's so sad, our prayers are with Shawn and their family as well as the Yates team.

To paraphrase a bit of scripture

The Lord works in mysterious ways
His mysteries to unfold.

No one knows the time nor the place from whence they may depart this life.

That's why we must all live each day to its fullest and take from it what joy and satisfaction we can.

Indeed. I couldn't believe it was her that was killed. I remember a couple of years back when she was having that heart transplant. And I think I saw something on our local news (Raleigh) about the crash, just didn't make the connection. I heard today at work she was coming home from a Fleetwood Mac concert or something

Once again, message for the Pettys - "It wasn't Andretti."

SS. As a John Andretti fan I glad to see him doing good. But he needs a top 10 or a win to lock that job up for good! He was the Petty's best chance for the future and present!
