When I attended a California university there was a club called "Ori-Oxi" and it was composed of Orientals & caucasians. I went to a couple of meetings with a Japanese friend...it was about 90% "Ori"! But ethnic clubs have been around for a long time now, what's the problem with one just for caucasians.

I remember a college friend of mine suggest that we start a 'white' engineering club at our school. There was Society of Women Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers, and other engineering groups. All of us said yes. There was 2 whites, 3 chinese, 2 filipinos, 1 iranian, and one hispanic, and all of us said it was a good idea.

OAKLEY, Calif. -- Lisa McClelland says she isn't a racist. She says her campaign for a Caucasian Club at her California high school is a move toward diversity, not bigotry.

Yes, if there are other clubs like the Black Student Union and Asian Club she should be allowed to.

No. There should be no clubs targeting any ethnic group.

No. Only minorities should be able to have clubs targeting an ethnic group.

She says everyone is invited -- and nobody will be excluded.

McClelland's ethnic background includes American Indian, Hispanic, Dutch, German, Italian and Irish. She says she and her friends feel slighted by other clubs at Freedom High School in Oakley, such as the Black Student Union and the Asian Club.

McClelland says she's collected 245 signatures of support from students, adults and others since announcing her plans three weeks ago.

One person who won't be signing up is Darnell Turner, first vice president of the local chapter of the NAACP. Turner says he thinks the club will create racial tension.

I do not have a problem with anyone who has gotten over their misguided white guilt. And I recognize that the implicit ideology behind most of the leftist propaganda in the culture wars is that whitey is the locus of all historical evils. That said, I recognize that clubs and organizations have always formed around minorities, but they were usually ethnic oriented and had more to do with a common culture. These clubs are based on race, not culture. I think that that is an important difference to mention.

Unfortunately, I do not see much of a choice left for descendants of European immigrants as they are being demonized by liberal intelligentsia as well as some in the various minority coomunities.

I fervently hope for the day when we can see each other as persons instead of members of a particular race.

There is a richness to be found in culture that is absent from the shallow water of identity politics.

Did anyone else see the interview with her on CNN last night? I caught it at the airport. I don't know if she was just camera shy, but she appeared dumb as a brick. Usually the people who pull these things off have some pizazz or something. She looked like she had been put up to forming the club by someone else.
