Fur Flies as 7,000 Mink Released

Some 7,000 mink were released Sunday night from a fur farm in northwest Finland, with no group yet claiming responsibility, officials said Monday.

Police said they had no suspects in what fur farmers have called the biggest attack on a Finnish mink farm.

Some two thirds of the mink released near the town of Kokkola, around 500 kilometers (310 miles) north of capital Helsinki, remained free by noon Monday. Local residents were joining the hunt to try to catch them.

Leif Finne, head of the fur farming organization in the region, told Reuters over telephone from Kokkola that the attack was the biggest in Finland.

"This is a farm with seven to eight thousand animals and all of the cages had been opened. This was a well planned attack with many perpetrators," Finne said.

"For the farmer, this is an utter disaster. There will also be an impact on the local wildlife as the minks are predators who will try and find food. Some of the minks will face a painful death. This is a terrorist act, nothing else."

Animal rights activists have claimed responsibility for some of the past attacks, but Finnish animal protection group Animalia, which wants to end fur farming in the country by legal means, denounced the act.

"Lots of problems are associated with fur farming, but releasing minks is the wrong way to end it in Finland," Animalia's head Hanna Kivinen told Reuters.

This happened in the states a while ago. The mink were starving & they attacked caged farm animals along with family pets.

I wonder what the environmental impact on local animals will be? Typical liberal non-sense ... all emotion, very little thought required. What next? Burn down the forest to stop deer hunting?

"Some of the minks will face a painful death. This is a terrorist act, nothing else."

To the animal rights activists, it is more natural for an animal to die from starvation.
That lends the lie to their supposed compassion for animals.

I imagine that shooting a few of these "people" for trespassing would diminish the enthusiasm of the rest to do this again. I wonder what Finnish law is on this subject?

Of course "fur is dead!" Minks are nasty little critters, who'd love to rip you to shreds! It would be a really bad idea to try wearing a live mink!
