Three Southern California Indian tribes plan to spend nearly $3 million on television ads in the recall campaign to support Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock -- a huge boost to two candidates who are struggling to match Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger in television advertising.

And from another article -- just to make sure that people understand that the ONLY reason the Indian Tribes are contributing to to McClintock is to help Bustamante elected. So why is McClintock accepting this money?!

----

"Polls suggest that Mr. Bustamante has stalled, so the only way to prevent a surge from Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger may be to shift some of his conservative support to maverick State Sen. Tom McClintock, who is running between 14% and 18% in the latest surveys. Last Friday the Morongo Band of Mission Indians began airing independent-expenditure ads in support of Mr. McClintock. The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation has also ponied up a large sum for a similar independent expenditure.

Sources tell me they have seen a memo from David Quintana, the legal counsel for the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, that was sent to tribal leaders. In it Mr. Quintana raised a warning flag about Mr. Schwarzenegger's positions and his reliance on several aides to former governor Pete Wilson, a skeptic on the expansion of Indian gambling. "This is war, we're going after Arnold Schwarzenegger," the memo concluded. The decision to invest in an effort to stop Mr. Schwarzenegger was made at a private strategy meeting last month, from which several more-moderate tribes were excluded. Participants discussed the need to keep Mr. McClintock in the race on "life support."

Would you be so kind and correct the title, somehow I accidentally deleted the first part of the title.

It should read:

"Tribes add millions to McClintock, Bustamante -- to battle Schwarzenegger's TV ads

or if this is too long, then abbreviate:

"Tribes add millions to McClintock, Bustamante to battle Schwarzenegger"

Thanks!

McClintock's campaign rejected the charge that the tribal contributions were part of a secret plot to boost Bustamante's campaign.

True. It's no secret, it's right out in the open.

But the full title is too long, that's why I started to edit it, to keep the important key words, without losing the meaning, and that's how I accidentally deleted parts I didn't mean to, and figured the "Tribes add millions to McClintock, Bustamante to battle Schwarzenegger" may be short enought, but won't lose the key words.

And if everyone knows it, McC must know it too, so why is he accepting tribal money KNOWING that the entire purpose is to elect Bustamante.

Are these the actions of a principled conservative?

Why shouldn't Tom allow the tribes to use the money anyway they see fit. What do you want him to do? Stand up and say - "I'm not worthy" or "You don't really want to support me" or "your money is tainted". More power to the tribes to participate in the greatest CA G.O.P. debacle of this decade. Maybe there is a reason they aren't giving money to Arnold this time.

If you want to make the Indian Gaming monies an issue then follow the donations or the lack of donations to the candidates. Wouldn't have anything to do with the spectre of unfair taxation as proposed by Arnold would it? I bet Nevada would love to see that happen.

As far as I can see, McCruz Bustaclintock's main priciple is feeding his own ego.

Perhaps becasue he and Arnold know that if we withdraws from the race most of the people who would have voted for him will vote for Arnold instead, but figure that having the Democrats boost McClintock's campaign in the meantime is a win-win situation.

No, Tom could stand up and say he is not going to take money under false pretenses.

But he really wants to see Bustamante elected, by his own words.

How can any conservatives keep supporting him, after all the truth is coming out about him, is beyond me.

I used to have respect for him and like him, except that this time he just couldn't win.

But the more I find out, the more obvious it is that Tom is just using his conservative credentials for an ego trip.

You saw, that he is also on record stating that he would do NOTHING about abortion, if he were elected govenor.

Maybe there is a reason they aren't giving money to Arnold this time.

I think it's due to that fact that two of Arnold's advisors have ties to Nevada gaming which has taken a loss due to Indian gaming in California and want to change that. Arnold is now running commercials promising to "make the Indians pay their fair share." The scent of corruption is indeed in the air but it's not from McClintock.

Yeah, those evil impoverished Indians. What a brilliant strategy.

What do you want him to do?

Quit. He will never get elected and is only helping Bustamante. Only his ego prevents him from doing so.

False pretenses?

What were the "false pretenses"?

As I suggested on another thread, maybe somebody could post a thread on the finanical backing for each of the candidates. We could then analyze the intent of each donation - and every donation accepted under "false pretense" could be returned. And every support group for each candidate - independent of the candidate could be eliminated. Furthermore we could analyze how well each candidate was managing his/her money.

It would serve the forum far better than divisive threads like this one.

Most CA indians are hardly "impoverished". The fact is a number of these "tribes" were fully assimilated and had voluntarily disbanded so they could sell of thier land decades ago. Then they "reconstituted" and bought land to build casinos after the law was changed to allow it.
