[history]
Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante got credit but did not have to attend a basic speech class at Fresno State in the late 1990s because a professor decided in 15 minutes or less that the Fresno Democrat would have earned at least a C based on his public utterances.

Echeverria acknowledged that some people still are going to be skeptical: "Some are going to argue that he received special treatment because he didn't actually attend those classes."
Well, yeah.

I believe the correct response to Echeerria's statement would be a "Like, DUH!"

How much would I have to pay Fresno State to award me a PhD based on real world experience?
To: Sabertooth
Outlandish! This treatment was usually reserved to Jerry Tarkanian's hoops players.

How much would I have to pay Fresno State to award me a PhD based on real world experience? You know, I had to give a speech about the Designated Hitter Rule in Speech 100 and got a B. I gave a lot more interesting talks to friends in bars on other subjects and got no credit. What a rip-off.

"Speech" as a requirement in the California University System has nothing to do with making speeches.
It is an oral communication requirement and is part of the "Golden four" along with mathematical reasoning, Logic and English composition. These four classes are cornerstone.
Looks like the cruzer pulled a fast one!

Even though I dislike Bustamante, this is a non-issue. He clepped a class. Fine. Happens all of the time. The man can speak well, after all.
...So give "credit" where it is due (even if it would be nice to bust his chops on this one).

He must have meant those great speeches he gave to African American organizations in honor of Black History.

Boy this is big league stuff. Now here is what I figure. Bustamante should be recalled for this major infraction of skipping a class. Then spread-eagled on an anthill in the desert. Now compare this to Arnold. He is a man of values. He posed full frontal nude for the "artist" Mapplethorpe, who became famous for immersing crucifixes into glasses of urine. Now that is the kind of class that Bustamante should take and the class he should have. Damn tooting. Now go find out if McClintock skipped a class. That will be some kind of major stuff. It's sure a good thing that Arnold's campaign doesn't stoop to the level of Davis and find nitpicky stuff about his competitors to expose as breaking news the last week of the campaign.

Southack said: "Even though I dislike Bustamante, this is a non-issue."
I agree. Bustamante's situation is probably most likely to allow such treatment for this particular class.
It's not too dissimilar to the exemption that veterans get from handgun licensing requirements. Of course, Davis has now removed that exemption, I believe.
So, we can presume that the Lieutenant Governor knows how to give speeches but we can't presume that veterans can safely handle firearms.
Gee...Maybe the university should make him prove his competency simply because it has the power to do so.

Mapplethorpe, who became famous for immersing crucifixes into glasses of urine. That was someone else.
Mapplethorpe is famous for the self-portrait photo of a whip inserted in his anus. Get your deviant "artists" straight.

Well you know, he really speaks very nicely, I think I would have passed him too. Very good voice, good timber, but that is just God's gift. But also, good sytax (that's not right, good spelling too since he's not me, maybe), good delivery.
Cruz's problem is not that he doesn't speak well, it's what he says.

I got my MS in Mechanical Engineering from Cal State Fresno in 89. I took courses from the local extension. One course I was able to take in abstentia. Rather than write a Thesis, we had a comprehensive exam.
