California Republican Party Leadership Endorses Arnold Schwarzenegger for Governor (press release)
CA GOP ^ | Sept.29, 2003 | CA GOP

Burbank, CA. – In an unprecedented move, the California Republican Party’s Board of Directors today unanimously voted to endorse gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger in the October 7 recall election. The vote was announced following a special meeting of the CRP Board in Burbank.

“We are proud to have two extremely competent Republicans on the ballot,” said California Republican Party Chairman Duf Sundheim. “Both would make exceptional governors, but only one can win. It is our hope that Republicans, Democrats and independents who are ready for change unite behind Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“Arnold has a proven ability to connect with voters, to solidify the Republican base while reaching out to Democrats and independents, and to excite new voters. It is our hope that Californians who share our concern for the future unite behind Arnold in the final days of this historic election,” continued Sundheim.

“This is an unprecedented vote for our Party, but then, again, this is an unprecedented election. We simply cannot afford to put our future at risk by keeping Gray Davis and Cruz Bustamante in office. With eight days left until the election, I encourage Californians in the strongest possible terms to vote “yes” on the recall and “yes” on Schwarzenegger.”

Today’s endorsement marks the first time that the California Republican Party’s governing board has endorsed a candidate in a contested gubernatorial race.

THE ARTICLE BEGINS: "In an unprecedented move, the California Republican Party’s Board of Directors today unanimously voted to endorse gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger in the October 7 recall election"

In what way is this "unprecedented? In virtually every election doesn;t the GOP Board of Directors endorse a Republican candidate?

Is it the "unanimous" part that is unprecedented?

Or is it that EVERYTHING about an unprecedented recall election would be unprecedented?

Words have meaning. So what the **** are they trying to convey??

>>> Todays' endorsement marks the first time that the California Republican Party's governing board has endorsed a candidate in a contested gubernatorial race <<<

Sounds like they've been listening to John Sebastian.

Did you ever have to make up your mind?
Say yes to one, and leave the other behind.
It's not often easy.
It's not often kind.
Did you ever have to finally decide?

They don't endorse in primaries, so it's "unprecedented" to endorse one Republican over another in the same race.

They endorse "the" Republican candidate in an election, but when there are multiple R candidates running, as in the primaries, they don't endorse one over another.

It is unprecedented that in a race where there are more than one R candidate, they endorse one. This is a huge blow to McClintock.

The unanimous endorsement was very good too.

Note the strong wording. They are telling everyone that Schwarzenegger is the REAL Republican Candidate and Republicans should vote for him.

Arnold has a proven ability to connect with voters, to solidify the Republican base while reaching out to Democrats and independents, and to excite new voters.

Something Tom's supporters aren't interested in. They'd rather get 30% of the vote -- you know, get simply the "conservatives" in the electorate -- in a split free-for-all election, in other words, just enough to win, than try to reach out, expand the base, and give a Democrat the experience of voting for a fiscally conservative Republican only to find their head doesn't explode.

Big deal.

Party establishments always pick one guy in a primary. They are just being more open about it here.

I know this isn't a primary either, but sides are always picked.
