|
KUWAIT CITY (AP)--Kuwaiti security authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle $60 million worth of chemical weapons and biological warheads from Iraq to an unnamed European country, a Kuwaiti newspaper said Wednesday.
The pro-government Al-Siyassah, quoting an unnamed security source, said the suspects had been watched by security since they arrived in Kuwait and were arrested "in due time." It didn't say when or how the smugglers entered Kuwait or when they were arrested.
The paper said the smugglers might have had accomplices inside Kuwait. It said Interior Minister Sheik Nawwaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah would hand over the smuggled weapons to an FBI agent at a news conference, but didn't say when.
Government officials couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
Iraqi Interior Minister Nouri Al-Badran met Tuesday with Sheik Nawwaf and discussed cooperation between the two countries in security matters. His visit is the first by an Iraqi interior minister to Kuwait since 1990. (END) Dow Jones Newswires

What unnamed European country? Any guesses?

I wonder why they chose Kuwait, one of our staunchest allies in the Middle East to go through. That doesn't seem too bright. These people presumably aren't terrorists, just entrepeneurs.

This, in my opinion, is the most significant statement in the news clip. It suggests that some fact checking and confirmation has already taken place, culminating in an arrest. It sounds like a sting operation.

Wow, can't believe all the hoop-la from the non-believers of the original post. I swear it was on tv this morning along about 10'ish central time. Couldn't say what channel because Mr. M was in charge of the remote at the time, but he hollered at me and I only heard the end. I was glad to see it posted, thanks, only wish there was more out on the story - who, what, where. Please let it not be another oops, it's an ice cream truck story.

If the Bush admin has any brains, once they get the stuff over here they'll call a press conference with a high ranking official like Rumsfeld and display some of it for the press to look at.

As I've said before, if the lack of WMD's rendered the war unjustified, will the reverse also be true? I predict that it will not, and the war will continue to be criticized for other reasons. In a week, the press won't recall or ever mention the WMD issue again.

I heard this break about an hour ago on Hannity's radio show. Is this for real? Why isn't there a huge red "Fox News Alert" on FNC? I haven't heard Brit Hume mention anything about this yet during "Special Report"...

Folks, let's get this verified. If true, we need to inundate every paper, web site, tv station, radio station, etc. with this information. This, if true, is HUGE!!
Again, verification first.

Bookmarked for further reading.
My impression is that, having reported several stories about WMD discoveries, the media is simply trying to get absolute confirmation before they run with this. That plus the fact that as much as we are hoping this is true, they are hoping its false.
