Kuwaiti security authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle $60 million worth of chemical weapons and biological warheads from Iraq to an unnamed European country, a Kuwaiti newspaper said on Wednesday. The pro-Government Al-Siyassah, quoting an unnamed security source, said the suspects had been watched by security since they arrived in Kuwait and were arrested "in due time." It did not say when or how the smugglers entered Kuwait or when they were arrested.
The paper said the smugglers might have had accomplices inside Kuwait. It said Interior Minister Sheik Nawwaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah would hand over the smuggled weapons to an FBI agent at a news conference, but did not say when.
Government officials could not be immediately reached for comment.
Iraqi Interior Minister Nouri Al-Badran met on Tuesday with Sheik Nawwaf and discussed cooperation between the two countries in security matters. His visit is the first by an Iraqi interior minister to Kuwait since 1990.

It is in the breaking news sidebar! |
Whoa, even AP thinks F****e is a dirty word now!
Although I was going crazy last night about this story not showing up in the lamestream news, I prefer to remain optimistic...maybe the story was shut down by the WH until after David Kay makes his presentation today.
I think this newspaper (al-seyassah) is the original source. Any Arabic speakers out there that can check it?
The site has a section (with an English version of the same paper?) called the Arab Times. The only similar story there is this:
Kuwait to install special scanners; Containers to be screened |
KUWAIT CITY: Screening machines - which work on gamma rays and will reveal the contents of containers and other vehicles without damaging them - will be installed at all the checkpoints in Kuwait by 2004, says the Operations Manager of the International Company for Inspection of Containers and Vehicles, Ering Davis. He said seven such machines will be installed to scan a container in just three seconds regardless of its size. Some 45 containers can be screened in an hour for a total of around 700 containers per day."
Each machine is expected to cost three million dollars, he added. Pointing out the machine was developed for use at the US Customs Department and Narcotics Control Agency, Davis described the screening machine as a combination of "latest technologies." These machines have been approved for use at over 200 sites in North America and are being introduced in Asia and Europe, he added. The system will assist in fast and effective inspection of containers and vehicles by the customs officials, he said. He added thousands of containers which came through the Nuwaiseeb checkpoint during the war to liberate Iraq were screened by this system. Meanwhile, the General Customs Department recently seized a large quantity of beer bottles, 20 packets of viagra and 11 pornographic cassettes at Abdali, says the Deputy Inspection Officer at Abdali checkpoint Khalid Al-Osaimi. Various contrabands such as arms, liquor, porno films and drugs smuggled from Iraq have been seized at the checkpoint using "FX screening machines" which were installed at the checkpoint a few days ago, he added. He described the machine as a "turning point" in the performance of the Customs Department, saying "many such machines are required at the checkpoint as the commercial traffic is expected to increase in the coming days."
