OUTRAGEOUS SMEAR
NRO - Corner ^ | Saturday, October 04, 2003 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 10/04/2003 7:51:52 PM PDT by swilhelm73

I half-heard someone on MSNBC’s “Abrams Report” last night saying that there are 6 million reasons to vote against Arnold, those 6 million reasons, of course, being the victims of the Holocaust. This has to rank as one of the stupidest and most unfair comments of the recall. Here is a New York Times report today, giving fuller context to Arnold’s comment.

As far as I can tell, Arnold’s view is a very crude version of that of John Luckas in The Hitler of History.

In any case, he’s not a Nazi. Here’s the Times bit. The Butler referred to is George Butler who wrote the book proposal in question. He read a fuller transcript to a Times reporter: In the portion of the interview read over the phone and later distributed by the campaign, Mr. Schwarzenegger said: "In many ways I admired people — It depends for what. I admired Hitler for instance because he came from being a little man with almost no formal education, up to power. And I admire him for being such a good public speaker and for his way of getting to the people and so on. But I didn't admire him for what he did with it. It is very hard to say who I admired and who are my heroes. And I admired basically people who are powerful people, like Kennedy. Who people listen to and just wait until he comes out with telling them what to do. People like that I admire a lot."

Mr. Butler said the book proposal had erroneously dropped a few words from a quotation attributed to Mr. Schwarzenegger. According to Mr. Butler's reading of the transcript, Mr. Schwarzenegger followed his comments about Hitler's public speaking by adding, "But I didn't admire him for what he did with it." He did not say, "I admire him for being such a good public speaker and for what he did with it," as he was quoted in the book proposal and in early editions of The Times.

Mr. Butler said he could not explain the inaccuracy. "I am amazed that something like that escaped me."

Mr. Butler also read other sentences of the transcript, spoken in Mr. Schwarzenegger's then-imperfect English, that related to the subject. "Yes, in Germany they used power and authority but it was used in the wrong way," Mr. Schwarzenegger said, according to Mr. Butler. "But it was misused on the power. First, it started having, I mean, getting Germany out of the great recession and having everybody jobs and so on and then it was just misused. And they said, let's take this country, and so on." Mr. Schwarzenegger concluded: "That's bad."

I'm sure reversing his statements in such a way, and not bothering to check the background at all, is sheerly an unintentional accident, and not an effort to get another NAZI charge in right before the election...

Fair enough. Doesn't that mean there are something like 200,000,000 reasons to not vote for a 'Rat?

This is a disgusting smear on Arnold and an outrage to the victims of the Holocaust. Liberals have taken it too far this time and will pay a price.

I agree with you.

I assume you took my number to be a reference to the US population? What I was striving for was the number of people known to have been killed by communists in the Soviet Union. I'm having doubts as to the accuracy of the number I used.

No gutter politics with McClintock. That's because he has stayed out of the gutter.

I went to the Drudge site just to see what everyone's been referring to all day. My personal belief is that we are all so sick of this lust for going in for the kill at the 11th hour that it will all backfire. At this point whether I was for Arnold or not I'd vote for him just to send a message of my distaste for these tactics.

My Dad fought the Nazis in WW2.

When I was six(1952) he gave me a helmet that he had kept in the attic.

I was a kid and back then I was into Cowboys and Indians.

The helmet was heavy and I remember the lightening bolts on the sides bugged me.

So I gave it back to my Dad and the next day he put it in our trash can.

I don't expect to run for office but if I do...

Someone can say my Dad gave me a Nazi helmet.

I can't imagine that I would let this defamation go unanswered. This is a terrible thing to say about anyone, especially a person who is headed into an election.

This guy never realized his mistake in the years since he wrote the rough draft? Then the paper never fact checked it.

You'd have to give me some pretty sound proof before I'd print what they did.

Liberals have taken it too far this time and will pay a price.

The last time they tokk it too far was at the Mondale Campaign Rally/Wellstone Memorial and they paid for it alright

We now have Norman (as that Jacka$$ Mondale called him in their debate) Coleman

No, it is more like 100 million.

Estimates of deaths in the Soviet Gulags alone are about at your 20 million figure. But then there are the North Koreas, North Vietnams, Cambodias, Ethiopias... And above all there is also China, and the "Great Leap Forward", when terror famine killed tens of millions. The "Black Book of Communism" tries to give some rough accounting, and arrives at 100 million as the most probable estimate.

Sorry, re-reading the previous fellow's post I see he specified "in the Soviet Union" - as to that, you are correct. The higher figure would be for "by communism".
