Carrier Corp. will close its manufacturing operations in DeWitt, eliminating 1,200 of 2,800 jobs here, the company announced today.
Carrier will shut its container refrigeration and compressor manufacturing operations, while maintaining and possibly expanding its research and development arm.
About 1,600 jobs in Carrier's warehouse, office, engineering and research areas will remain in DeWitt. These decisions are subject to Carrier's collective bargaining obligations.
Ted Amyuni, senior vice president of operations for Carrier, said the decision is essential to Carrier's competitiveness and growth. With more than 80 percent of container refrigeration products currently shipped to Asia, Carrier has decided it needs to be located closer to its markets, he said.
Carrier's container refrigeration needs will now be served by its existing manufacturing plant in Singapore, while its compressor needs will be handed by plants now operating in Georgia and China.
Carrier is in discussions with the state over the potential concentration of its research and development activities in Syracuse. That would mean increasing technical employment in areas such as environmental systems, indoor air quality technology, along with existing concentrations in HVAC and refrigeration engineering.
Separation benefits will be available to eligible employees, the company said.
Carrier officials met last week with Gov. George Pataki and U.S. Rep. James Walsh to discuss the future of Carrier's operations in Syracuse. They left the meeting without any commitments.
Carrier Corp., a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., is the world's largest manufacturer of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment.
Carrier came to Syracuse in 1937 from New York City, locating in the former Franklin automobile plant on South Geddes Street, currently the site of Fowler High School.
Carrier moved to its Thompson Road headquarters in DeWitt in October 1947.
United Technologies announced plans to take over Carrier in 1978, and shareholders approved the deal in 1979.
In 1990, Carrier moved its corporate headquarters from Syracuse to Hartford, Conn., home of UTC.

Hillary and Chuckie should be overjoyed. Think of all the ozone-depleting compounds being moved offshore! Think of the amount of electricity which will not be used.

Yup this is devastating news. Anytime jobs leave families with mortgages and other bills hurt.

Rome, New York just lost a bid on a contract for a lab at the old Griffiss Air Base. No where have I seen or heard of any intervention on either one of these issues by our illustrious senators, Hillary and Chuck. In fact, Chuckie was supposed to be in Fulton, New York on the 29th of Sept. for a seminar to try to re-open the Nestle Chocolate factory there, and he backed out at the last minute so he could appear on TV bashing President Bush. Clinton and Schumer's ignoring this area doesn't surprise me one bit. It's payback at least for our City (Rome), because it usually always goes Republican.

Not surprising. New York State has been trying to tax itself out of the mess caused by 9-11. The last budget was full of tax increases and Pataki vetoed. The Assembly and Senate--both Democrat and Republican--too used to doling out the pork voted to override. Way to go NY.
